OLPC Give One, Get One Program Extended to Dec. 31, Raking in $2 Million a Day
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:30 PM on November 23, 2007
Even if governments aren't ponying up, a hell of a lot of people are: OLPC's Give One, Get One program's been pulling in $2 million in "donations" a day. Realizing it'd be dumb and pointless to cut off a major revenue stream in four days—totally missing prime holiday spending time—they're stretching the new "deadline" way out to Dec. 31.
They've also opened up bulk ordering for "educational purposes," with quantities of 100-999 going for $300 a pop, 1000-9999 running $249 and anything above 10,000 dropping it to $199.
And if for some reason you wanna give one but not get one, starting next year you'll be able to do that too. During Give One, Get One's bonus time, they'll "solicit input and transition to a program of giving only at the beginning of 2008." I hate to be cynical (it's officially the holidays, after all), but I have the feeling a "give one, get nothing" program isn't going to pack quite the same fundraising punch.[Business Wire, Thanks John]

When we see the number of nigerian frauds, viruses, phishing and other wonderful things skyrocket due to 3rd world countries computing resources being improved, we will know why. Perhaps we shall give free handguns to impoverished neighborhoods to see the outcome as well, for it is their "right" to bear arms as it is everyones "right" to have education, correct?
If the individuals have no resources to buy laptops, nor do they have the intellect to use them properly or the ethics. When communities and even nations, do nothing but pray in the shade while smoking hashish and opium all day, it is not likely they will ever have anything besides nice pipes in which to smoke it and basic housing in which to do it. ie mexico with tequila, ciesta and tin roofed houses or even india with marijauna, hashish again, rickshaws and huts made of doo doo.
I say send them all a thousand truckloads of condoms and anal lube, this goes for the africans too. All that rice can be put to better use producing ethanol for our SUVs that we work so hard to build roads for and build buildings to drive back and forth on, working hard every day of our miserable lives, as we have done for the past 500 years, hence our ability to have nice things in this particular century. Unlike those unfortunately less fortunate individuals who are quite simply lazy, stoned, hypocritical beggers.

espire, if not work, then what do you think brought about roads, houses, infrastructure, economy and other things this country has? Do you think it came from magic, or by getting stoned and praying, or drinking lots of tequila and having ciesta all day? I doubt it.
I know what people in other countries do. Its not very difficult to figure out that if you do not build, produce, manufacturer or otherwise create anything, then you will not have anything, like laptops or the ability to buy nice ones.
Not being overly humanitarian does not make me racist. If you wish your family and yourself to work your entire life while another family and individual do absolutely nothing all day and then start carjacking you because they like your car, thats your option. A good example of this would be illegal mexican immigrants from mexico crossing the border into THIS country and stealing our infrastructure, economy and all that.
Perhaps you, Mr. jrghoull, are too ignorant to comprehend that. It is doubtful that if humanity wiped from existance you and your entire lineage for the past 2,000 years and all evidence of your contribution to the world that any significant difference would be noticed. In fact I doubt anyone would notice anything different at all or even miss you.
It is my feeling that the olpc laptops are nothing more than another latenight commercial begging for 79 cents to buy rice to feed (or teach) something that shouldnt have been produced in the first place. In civilised communities they call this "planned parenthood", something that often escapes the attention of the ignorant.
No doubt some people are getting fat and rich at the expense of the consumers with humanitarian feelings, the 3rd world rugrats are likely getting nothing useful other than a led tainted piece of plastic, pcb and chemical that will further pollute the world and promptly use it to phish for credit card numbers, probably yours.

I'd like to see you work for a week as hard as these people do to provide the food and water necessary to their survival. I also suggest you so do some volunteer work in school in these impoverished countries before you judge what you know nothing of. The causes for all of your complaints are precisely because they don't have proper access to that which developed countries do. These laptops are going to children for education, not to nigerian scammers. Condoms aren't quite the answer to everything, and the reason that we've been more successful than them is absolutely not because we've worked harder.

Anyway, like i was saying. The laptops will bring about absolutely nothing other than thousands more internet crimes for the secret service to investigate. The involved corporations will be raking in the cash with no more consideration for national security than president bush, while he allows the opportunity for illegal iraqi immigrants from canada, illegal pakistani immigrants from mexico, and so on... to terrorize this country.
They do not need laptops, they need hammers, nails, shovels, saws, etc and to get off their butts and stop smoking hashish and praying to their ridiculous gods, which often tell them that the USA is Satan. But go for it, send these people all your money, buy them electronics, thats often youre choice.
It is my opinoin about the olcp as it always has, that olpc will bring about nothing good. Perhaps these people might just need to learn how to make clothing and grow food and some other basic animal like skills before some idiot who visited cambodia (my guess is he went for some kiddy sex anyway) decides the whole world including 3rd world countries needs laptops.
FYI: That is where the whole olpc idea came from, some idiot went to cambodia and got a bright idea.

Nightsky, No, there are mexican immigrants that are not illegal. These particular ones are prescreened and generally have some education and track record of initiative and hard working, probably the reason theyre immigrating to the US and leaving the rest of the lazy, tequilaholics to their own demise back in mexico.
Likewise when Cambodians show initiative and the desire to work hard in the US they can also apply for a greencard. Being the catalyst for olpc obviously isnt showing much initiative though, its being pathetically 3rd world. Of course you cant blame CHILDREN for it, you can blame the adults, government and parents, whom shouldve followed this simple rule.
Do not procreate beyond your financial capabilities. It is irresponsible and inconsiderate, in many highly technologically advanced countries it is also illegal.

i cannot speak in detail about why the many countries in africa have had so much problems developing, largely because i do not know. But the idea of it being due to genetics is incomprehensible.
What i do know, is that they have very little in terms of resources (and what they do have has been essentially muscled away from them), and have had a number of bad/currupt leaders (worse than ours), which might even still be an issue for them today.
what i think you dont understand is that you can work your ass off and completely fail. That is how life is. If you have no education then odds are you will go into the unskilled labor trade (such as farming). If however the land can grow little to no food, then you are screwed. With education, Then in time things can be made better than they are today.

This is too funny. Happy Thanks for raping an indiginous people, stealing their land and claiming its yours day! No accountability. Funny people like foxy are like those bitches who came to the states claiming that they were looking for freedom while completely oppressing another and taking what they believed was hard work as their sense of entitlement.
It's like Australians who believe that they are better than people who would like to immigrate to the island when Australia, as we know it today, was basically a penal colony of the British. The ancestors of a bunch of imperial criminals. Whatever.
In addition, American infrastructure is not just the result of the hard work of people who have been proud to be American; it is largely the result of the exploitation of peoples, but believe whatever you want because most people who posses views like yours generally descend from bitter white trash. Let me guess, you were rejected from your choice of college and you blame affirmative action. I'll tell you a secret: affirmative action did not keep you from getting into your top school.
Still, I have a good feeling that you have no problem buying a diamond from Africa that helps lead to much of the poverty there. You probably would have been one to support proxy wars against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan and claim to be a victim of unprovoked terror decades later. Then, after asking for about a half a second, "why do they hate us?" you would proceed to do what you do best and try to destroy the rest of the world so that you can browse the internet without falling victim to some scam.

As a proportion of Australian population, the descendants of convicts are less than 1%. With so much racism and ignorance it is no wonder the rest of the world hates us. Nice job playing into the negative stereotype and exposing your ignorance. The less we make an effort to understand other cultures and societies the more we will continue to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world and in a truly global economy of the near future any isolationist behavior on an societal and political level will eventually limit our economy (or force us to change once we sart to lose economic control on the world stage).
For those who care, the term "Third World" is obsolete with the end of the Cold War and is in fact somewhat derogatory and very un-PC. The appropriate terms are "Developing Nation" and "Newly Industrialized Countries" (less common but used for those countries that have more advanced economies but have not reached fully developed status - China, India, etc.). See Wikipedia for more info.
Getting back to OLPC, I am ready to sign up for the Give One, Get One Later program, so I can wait for v2.0 h/w. As one who has traveled to a dozen or so developing nations I am highly rooting for the success of the OLPC and am warmed by the early success of this program. I am taking several OLPCs to Haiti on my next trip and can't wait to see the kids using them. It is unfortunate that you see people without means as potential internet pirates. Do you really think that the next century's biggest thoughts and ideas will come solely from our country? However much we wish it were the case, it is not... Do the math.. I feel, instead of focusing on the vitriolic parts of Fox's comments, we need to closely examine the point (i believe) he is trying to make. Essentially, he thinks the third world people are the third world people because they deserve it, that is, they are lazy, etc.
However, the reasoning behind initiatives such as OLPC are that the third world folks do not deserve it; they are disadvantaged due to lack of opportunity, and OLPC is a means to improve oppurtunities.
It is a more fundamental question of why should the 'haves' care about the 'have nots'? Is it lack of oppurtunity to blame or the lack of initiative? This applies even within a third world country like India - positive affirmation, subsidies, etc, all deal with the same question.
Btw, i am an Indian. ( i don't smoke Hashish, but do frequently commute in rickshaws, and don't live in a hut!)

I still have family living in Cambodia, and despite having repeatedly applied for U.S. greencards, they have been denied. They run a sugarcane juice stand in Phnom Penh and work hard everyday to provide for themselves. Even though they live in a 3rd world country, they still "procreate" (you seem to be implying that all people living in 3rd world countries should stop having kids and die) because they need their kids to take care of them when they grow old. Still, Australia, like America and many other currently "free" nations, has a colonial history that is often overlooked when attending to issues like immigration, and their representational governments elected by their citizens pass those discriminatory laws.
