Nissan's GT-R Data-Dense Dashboard Explained
Posted by Brian Lam at 1:14 PM on November 20, 2007
Fast lane daily has a video of the Nissan GT-R, with rare footage of that amazing instrument cluster designed by Gran Turismo game designers. Fast forward past the talking head to witness footage of the boost gauge, lateral and longitudinal G-forces (over time!), among many other stats, at your fingertips. Might have been better to build this stuff into HUD, as you don't want to be staring at the digital cluster pack for longer than you need to in a 3-second car. [Fast Lane Daily]

Remember the Skylines? Uglier than hell on the outside and even worse on the inside. I think the biggest reason the Murano's interior looks better is because it was designed in the US but that certainly isn't saying much...just that the Japanese are worse than Americans at interior design.
Still, it's important to keep in mind that the GT-R is function over form, hands-down. The placement of the dash components, the knobs, buttons, and displays, are all intuitive. The last car to have such an visceral interior arrangement was probably the Civic from a few years ago, dunno why.
But it's true, they could have splurged and used whatever aluminium they had left over from the suspension, polished it up a little bit, thrown it on the dash, and tossed the crappy, crappy plastic.

Am I the only one that thinks that the interior is a bit too pedestrian for the external design? The friggin Murano's interior is spectacular. What gives?

Does it bug anyone else that the "fully customizable" driver display isn't touch screen. If I'm driving I won't have time to turn a knob/ don't want to. Maybe I'm being picky...

Sh*t I jumped the gun on the last one a little bit. My buddy is on a waiting list and told me he has to pay when his name comes up but I call BS. So, not to make myself look like a complete ass hat but if anyone is or has been on a waiting list for a car, what's the standard procedure? Do you pay a deposit in exchange for current MSRP once the vehicle is delivered, pay up front, or pay in full when you get a hold of it?
Tis better to be wrong and make yourself look like an idiot than to be wrong and let someone else make you look like an idiot :-P

Crap I forgot one more thing...
5. If anyone is able purchase a GT-R from a dealer for 70K, not including options, tax, tags, or any other BS, I'll buy their gas for a year. The problem with cars like this one is not only do you have to worry about dealer premiums, you'll also have to consider the effect of inflation (that's right, inflation) since it'll be a 2 year wait before you get yours. Unless you pay up front, granted.

1. This car transcends porn. It is the equivalent of physical intercourse followed by a happy ending and a cigarette to top it all off. Yes, I'm being serious and no, that's not over doing it.
2. The rep in the video is an idiot and if you see him on the street you MUST run him over, preferably with a Kia. He seemed like he was reciting a script he memorized the night before and it should be obvious he has no technical experience whatsoever and is there basically for PR and marketing.
3. The Nissan press release reiterates the rep's claim that the engine and tranny are assembled by a single 'craftsman' in a clean room environment which limits production to 1000 units per month. Still, if Merc AMG can hand-build 18,000 engines per year (50 engines every day), I don't see why Nissan can't.
4. There's a good reason why they brag about cast aluminum: it's tougher than reinforced shit to work with yet light and durable once you get it right. The rockets that got man to the moon? Thank cast aluminum in the combustion chambers.

@James: 70k is confirmed. I was at the LA Auto Show when it was announced. Of course, it will not sell at this price.

Way to upsell "cast aluminum" as bleeding edge.
"Cast aluminum" because we ran out of money when building out "engine assembly clean room", so we couldn't afford a mill/lathe assembly and you fucktards don't know the difference anyway. Now give us money.
I'm not saying cast won't do the job, but why brag about it?

Cool display, but I think it cheapens the car in a slightly tacky kind of way.
Impressed with the engine and specs though.

Can any gearheads out there confirm that if what the rep said is true ( a single technician hand assembles the entire engine in a clean room) that would make that the only production car that can boast that? To my knowledge, even the higher end Lambo's and Ferrari's have engine assemblies that happen in stages by more than one technician.

@Ioakim: Im pretty sure another manufacturer does it or used to do it, I think mercedes. The engine on one of the models would come signed by the person who made it, a really nice touch..
I remember it because Jermey clarkson said you would be able to hunt the guy down if it ever broke down, and i found that pretty funny. I dont know about clean room or anything though, just that one person made the engine.

@ LOGRUSZED
Cast Al is pretty cutting edge for a strut tower in a production car.
Sure, it's not Carbon, but it's still way cooler than sheet steel.

Good lord that's a hideous vehicle.
Sure, I love the specs but why can't it LOOK good too? And if you say 'But it's a poor man's exotic!' I say attractiveness doesn't add to base price.
As for the overwrought interior/display, if you need to see "braking G's" you're more about Show than Go.

@tdj114: WRT to your #4, you have no idea what you're talking about, do you.
Regardless, in this case, use of aluminum is exotic even if it's garden variety 6061 and is cast (rather than forged, or tubular/welded).

RE: Waiting lists
I was on the waiting list for a BMW 328 hard top convertible (to be delivered this Dec) and didn't have a pay a penny.
The dealer said that since my options "were logical" that I didn't have to put anything down and that they could sell it to someone else in the blink of an eye if I walked out on them.
I'd assume that the GT-R falls in the same boat. Get something normal and your buddy is right. Get a pink exterior with purple interior and you can bet that the dealer will be asking for a rather large desposit.
