N95 Accelerometer Used to Control R/C Car; Begs to be Ported to the iPhone
Posted by Adam Frucci at 7:20 AM on November 30, 2007
Some enterprising modders have written a Python application that links up a remote control car with their Nokia N95 via Bluetooth, using the accelerometer to turn the phone into a little steering wheel. It's awesome. The next logical step would be to put a camera on the car that streams to the phone so you could see where it was going when it was out of your field of vision. N95/iPhone modders, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Let's make this happen. [Project Page via New Launches]

I see no proof that they did anything other than video someone holding a phone, and someone driving a truck in the backround....

I just installed the Lightsaber app onto my N95 and I thought it was the best thing ever, but now I need to have this on mine instead.

that would be the coolest remote control car ever. I would get an N95 just for that. I wonder if the iPhones mod would work with the iPod touch though.

If its using Bluetooth, it'll probably drop the connection long before it runs out of your vision.

It's trying to be a Wii-mote!

Wii-like huh? Nice, some delay but I know it's all solvable.

@Y2KGTP: You're right, there's no proof, but then again it's not too difficult to do. There's already a couple of writeups on using python on the n95 to transfer data via bluetooth to Arduino microcontrollers. It's then trivial to hook it up to a RC car.

Or, instead of Wii-like, you can have it Wii-exact. Wii-xact? :)

(Yes, it's my article and apparently I'm shameless.)

This would be sweet on an RC plane ... although there would need to be something a little longer range than bluetooth involved ...

I personally like my N95 though the volume up button collapsed on me and now I have to get it fixed (I still have 11 months on my warranty so no rush).
I wrote a little thing about the N95 and all the cool things about it here: [www.theweeklypixel.com]
From the top of my head, if I compare the iphone vs the n95, I'd say the N95 has an awesome open source community (with apps like rotate me which emulates the iphone's turn and screen changing coming out soon, as well as just fun things you can do like use the Wii to control a game on your phone), you can play GBA roms on the N95, it has a great 5mp camera that can upload images straight to flickr, it has 3.5g for blazing speed, very good GPS support (and 3rd party software that integrates Google maps on it), and best of all it has the Sling Player.
If you have a sling box, you definitely need this phone. If not, well it's worth the 100+ dollar investment. You can have awesome TV on your phone (can connect to your DVR, Tivo, whatever). Add the fact that the N95 can seamlessly connect to TV's with its cable out and you have Cable TV anywhere you go.
I personally love the iphone's music capabilities and its browser is as good as it gets on a portable device - but those 2 things won't surpass the N95 imo.

does something like this mean that at some point there is going to some kind of "official" r/c car for cell phones?

seriously, would someone who's used both the n95 and the iPhone (enough to appreciate what both offer) tell me which they prefer and why?? In the states market, please. Thanks in advance (leave me a message on my Giz account please)

i love my n95, although lately its been pissing me off. my volume down button collapsed on me. and sometimes the vibrator seems shakey.
but i also bought my phone off ebay from some guy in hong kong, so to get it fixed I have to send it to hong kong. another pain in my side. but i may just try to sell this one on ebay and get the us version since its better anyway.
ive played with the iphone, i spent a good deal of time messing with it, and i think the UI is nice, if you're not running around and trying to send texts in the car, and i think it sucks as a phone in general (thats what every iphone owner i know has told me).
i think you get more bang for the buck with n95. buy an unlocked one use it with any carrier no problem, true gps receiver, and the camera i love the camera and use it for everything (so nice to just always have a decent camera on me, turns out there are more times than i thought when id want to take a picture but didnt have the camera)
i think music capability is just as good on the 95 as the iphone. the UI to get to the music isn't quite as good maybe, but i dont need fancy scrolling animations of album art to find the music i want to listen to. the only thing the iphone has over the n95 in my opinion, is a bigger hard drive, and if you're hanging out with non-geeks its the only geeky awesome phone (besides blackberry maybe) that they will respect

soldstatic, I got mine for relatively cheap (much less than what they said it would go for) at mobilecityonline.com - if you decide to return it or sell it on ebay, I would suggest getting it from that website. But yea, I hear you on the volume down button collapsing - my volume up button did. Since I got it from a retailer I'm under warranty (wouldn't you be too? or is it because it's not from America...) and I'll be fixing it next year. I want my N95 at least through the holidays :)

Even better. WiFi with N95 or iPhone, Camera bandwidth included. Problem solved...
