"MC Mechanic" Masterpiece: One Hand Fixes the Other
Posted by Brian Lam at 8:45 AM on November 18, 2007
I just found Shane Willis's MC Mechanic piece via Joel@BBG. Photographer Shane Willis made this homage to Escher's Drawing Hands 1948 litho, yet his process included not looking at the original. He wanted to infuse his own style and impression of Escher's original so did his by memory. I'm inclined to think this looks like Luke's replacement hand, engaged in peer to peer hardware review. Shane's work is genius, and Joel's not too shabby for still managing to dig up stuff like this after all these years of Gadget Finding. [Photo.net via JJ]

Hey sorry to have you knuckle under to this kind of minutiae, but would copies of this picture be called hand prints?

Damn, those hands look amazingly realistic. The people designing the iLIMB should invest in his techniques, lol.

Umm. I hadn't realized genius was just copying another genius.

Well, I guess this is another way you could say something is a "hand drawing"

Photoshoped picture... not drawing, not piece. :P
Interesting... though not exactly original.
Escher is immortal though. Hows that Escher game going, I wonder...

Is that the arm from the first Terminator that Skynet found?
If so, it looks like it's already "self aware".

Just stop it.
It's an adaptation, not a rip off.
Christ people, it's okay to have fun with art.

What is with the "JJ@BBG" and "via JJ", not afraid of sending readers to a not-really-competing blog?

@spinner: Joel is a buddy, and I address him casually as the former editor of this blog, and a friend. It's short hand. I think the link is there for people to see, and click on. What are you getting at?

Those hands probably look amazingly realistic because they are actually real. The piece is a digitally edited photograph. Willis is a photographer.
I like the idea of the piece, but it loses points because it isn't entirely original. The quality of the piece is good but not amazing; some of the editing doesn't look quite right. These are all my opinions, of course.
