Mac Classic Devolves to Icon
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:51 AM on November 22, 2007
There's little doubt that the Mac Classic is an iconic piece of computing history, but this SattaMac mod is truly, inarguably an icon. Even the most hardened PC users need to grit their teeth and admit, yes, the Mac Classic is an icon. Damn that modder! Damn him!!
From what we can tell, the SattaMac is made from nothing but a Mac Classic and some well-placed black and off-white paint. Granted, it's not exactly ready for operation. But were you really doing anything with that old machine before? Seriously, we're coming by and cleaning out your basement. And kicking you out per your mom's request*.
*We just realised that there probably is some poor, poor reader who really does fulfil the stereotype and live in his mom's basement. On behalf of Gizmodo, we'd like to apologize** making fun of you at every turn for the last several years.
**By "apologize" we mean we both know that the $170 in your "savings account" doesn't justify*** this money-saving venture.
***Seriously though, you're cool. We'll lay off on the jokes**** for a while.

Haha! I know Satta. We find old macs on the side of the road and give them to him.

thanks gene for pointing this out to me tonight!
thanks for all the comments too .... this piece is just a little stepping stone towards an expo with dozens of painted macs and a lot of extra fun gear and merch -- in about a year. in melbourne .... and who knows ...

I second the pillow idea. But it would need to have iPod speakers in it, or a soundchip to go "pong" when I squeeze it.

Make this a huggable pillow, and I'd buy one for $25.

I worked on so many of these things so long ago. When I look at them, my first reaction is, "Where did i put the case cracker?". I remember upgrading the 128's. Then the "Classic" came out and IT had an INTERNAL HD!! Wow! Now where cookin'! I loved those little 20 pound doorstops. Beige is beautiful!

The Classic is cool - I still have mine in storage.
Used to carry it to and from work in it's own back-pack - sort of a luggable rather than a portable LOL
The stuff I did on that little B&W screen - awesome :-)

@liquidsoapdispenser:
totally agree,
and I miss my Amiga A500, cheaper, faster, better than a Mac - and true multi tasking, but who remembers that now?
Cute but crap.

I'm a little disappointed we're talking about a "Mac Classic" that came out in 1990, rather than the original 1984 Macintosh. Isn't the original Mac an icon, and the "Mac Classic" just a copy of the true icon?

The EPA has officially deemed your stream of consciousness as a "Superfund" site. ConEd and Exxon-Mobil will send some engineers your way soon to determine when the PCB dredging can begin.

@Singlespeed: If only I didn't build a micro planted aquarium for mine, I'd try it out, but my betta's living in such a cool little tank I'll just have to hold off :p

I do like the off-white ivory-ness and the black edges appear to be electrical tape - now far too cute to shotput off the 10th floor balconey.

I had one of these back in the day, only to have my mother give it away because she thought I didn't use it. And that's why I'm a PC person now...

I did a mod of a mac classic back in college. My beta fish Buddy has a perfect home inside his Macquarium! It was a blast to put together. My only advice is to be REALLY sure you tank is sealed! Give it a try dudes. Would make an excellent holiday project.

I loved my Mac Classic when I was a kid. Today's iMac just doesn't offer the convenient flat, wide top upon which a cat can sit and bat at your cursor on the monitor that these li'l guys could...
