LG Files Patent for Way-Cool Detachable Wireless Earbuds

LG just figured out a way to nestle a couple of wireless earbuds into the hinge of a clamshell handset. Leave them attached to the phone, and they act like a couple of ordinary small speaker/microphones, but pop them out and stick them in your ears, and you've got yourself some rockin' 'phones without all those wires. When the phone rings, one of these acoustic transducers is used as the mike and the other as an earpiece. LG also designed a version of the tiny wireless cans for a candybar-style phone, where the two earpieces are stuck into the top and bottom of the front of the device. Neat stuff, but it looks like those small pieces would be easy to lose. [US Patent & Trademark Office, via Unwired View]

I'd be all about this, but I hate earbuds unless they have the cushiony things that foam up like the gun range earbuds.

Great bsuiness model. I'm sure they will charge $50 for you to replace the missing buds because after all, they're next to impossible to loose right?

Neat idea, but I have never found a pair of earbuds that didn't hurt my ears. The closest I've ever come was a pair that felt good in my left ear, but really hurt my right ear.

all I see are fairly standard flip and candybar cellphones with projectile dodads and lots of numbers with little strings attached.

If you accidentally hit "speakerphone" mode with those buds on, you'll experience the total Bose audio-silencing effect for free and for life!

And they communicate with the phone in what manner? I don't see any room for a transceiver.
