Laptops Designed by Children
Posted by Brian Lam at 3:32 PM on November 20, 2007
When adults design a laptop for children, it looks like the OLPC or Speak and Spell. When laptops are designed by children they look like the setup above. The PurC PC (Purple Construction Paper PC, my name) was made by an 8-year old girl in the youngster-founded, no-adults-allowed "The Laptop Club".
Alphanumerics are pegged where function keys are normally situated. Below are the real function keys, like, "kitten, dog, cat, bird, collar, lease, hamster, and design pet." There's the unfortunate, "Buy Immediately, shop, order", too. Corruption starts so young. Too bad Fake Steve Jobs already has a patent on Child-Like-Wonder in Computing Device(s)— he told me the C&Ds are in the mail for the lower 98-percentile of the club, and the other 2% are being taken from their parents to be trained as 5th generation Apple designers. There are 8 more models at The Morning News, so check em out. [CNet via TheMorningNews via BoingBoing]

When i was 8 my dad had a macintosh 2. its white screen amused me for hours as i kept trying to get the paper airplane to fly across the screen.
Am i the only person thats concerned these kids are not only implementing online shopping, but iphones into their designed laptops? What does that say about us as a nation? Trust me I'm a fat kid in college, but wheres the "health tips" button? Or "advanced book assignments button?"
We need to check our priorities as adults so our kids don't grow up as ... well anyone who would design a dedicated iphone button. Kids of america FTL.

I was thinking dedicated open and close buttons like if you wanted to close a window or open a app. Use the Dpad to navigate and big buttons. Eliminate the double click make everything twice as efficient. Or maybe the laptop doesn't open from the top like normal laptops. I'm with Bryan you guys are just lame.

@JAV: I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, and say it was supposed to be CHores.
However, my next laptop will definitely need a Hamster (purple) and Pentagram (red) button. I won't buy otherwise!

Don't sell kids short. What if "Open" brings up a menu of web sites and apps? what if "Close" shuts them down. On the other hand an open button on the outside would be cool. Press it and the machine unfolds ala Transformers :)

I am going to be honest with you, the kids that designed these laptops should be executed, and their parents violently murdered. I don't care what those kids do. Nobody should have to subject themselves to this kind of torture.

I love these, colors, create pet buttons, yarn mouses and ditch that stupid QWERTY. Dont come down on the kids for doing it their way, let them create what they want. Things are only impossible if someone tells you they are. What if someone told 8 yr old Steve Wozniak, "Its impossible to build a computer"? I would be reading this on an old IBM Selectric (or not).

These are actually pretty good for 8-year-olds. If I designed a computer like this when I was 8, it would just be a picture of a T-rex eating a keyboard. And probably a sword drawn somewhere randomly on the paper. HP Conan Edition.

On the average Windows user's system, Internet Explorer looks like someone loaded a shotgun with random bookmark buttons and fired it at the top of the window.

Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy! So is that all kids think about these days in this country? Has anyone been to India or China - ever? These kids seem to think that a freaking $500 iPhone is something everyone should have? Rightly said . . . these 'tards don't even come close to the intellect, maturity and thinking kids from other countries display.
I feel its worse that this is being encouraged. The thinking indeed comes out in creativity! This is not innovation. This is expression. Maybe this can be used to decide which kids should serve as pot makers in Afghanistan for 2 years or send them to a shrink!
I am scared now . . . . the future of this country in the hands of a bunch of obese+fat kids growing up in a mall.

This is great. My kids have also designed 'laptops' made of paper at one point or another.
The interesting thing to me is how they view the technology as purely a means of doing something they want to do, rather than as a gadget for it's own sake, which is how too many engineers view technology, IMO.
These are 100% experience designs.
Sadly, they will be ridiculed, bullied, and straight-jacketed out of that free-thinking inventiveness all too quickly. The few that escape go on to create great things.

also, on that second picture....'babysitter', 'maid', 'chef' (and i bet the one next to that is 'butler'). kid's last name is probably "hilton".

Obviously your'e not getting it... a laptop the thickness and weight of a sheet of paper in witch keyboard and screen space are determined by the user! all keys are fully configurable (probably word recog sensitive) and god knows what kind of processor nd battery autonomy it has! unfortunateny those models look like mockups...or the system is frozen...
