iPod is Blown Up, Encased in Resin, and Still Works
Posted by Adam Frucci at 6:00 AM on November 14, 2007
Artist Billy Chasen took an iPod, blew it apart, and encased it in resin. Big deal, right? Well, the cool thing about this is that the iPod still works. Yeah, despite being blown up and frozen in resin, he's still able to play music off of it. This would be the best desk stereo ever just hook it up to speakers, get a remote control working on it, and you've got one distinctive piece of functional art on your desk. Awesome. Looking at some of the pics (especially the one from the bottom) it looks like there are pockets around the electronics, which would make sense depending on what's in the resign mix.
All in all a cool piece of e-art.

I love headlines that get the wrong point across to those without a brain. The iPod was not "Blown Up", just dissected and encased in resign. Looks awesome but does not showcase any durability in the product. Go check out the Gulf War Gameboy at Nintendoworld to see some serious damage.
Hopefully he popped in a bigger hard drive before the pour, looks like a Gen 3?

@Reilao: I think you just mix and pour resin.

How do you not screw with things when resining them? Does this not require heat like I had previously thought? o.O

c'mon, though, replacing ipod parts is not hard. 10 minutes for anything, tops. doing it without mangling the metal casing is a whole other PITA.

seems like everything Apple makes, need to be taken apart, blown up, or smashed (like the dude who dropped a jackhammer on his MacBook)..to see, how it works, or if it still works...after the brutal treatment......something about Apple...some fan following. It would be pretty interesting to see if someone does this to an iPod Touch...challenging Huh!

@nutbastard: The guy who did this seems to address that issue on his site. The dock does connect at the bottom, which is also the reason for the lego legs.

@disgustepated: agreed.
@newgalactic: i snorted my lunch time soda with that. very funny.
@keronian: I can't see it perfectly, but it does appear that the connector is pulled down to the bottom of the cube. I could be wrong though.

@newgalactic:
but you'll never need to replace the battery, since this has to be plugged in to be usefull. he doesn't even need it in there.

Okay, sweet, and all, but... how do you control it? Is the dock connector intact on the bottom?

These speakers would match it nicely, imagine those cones coming out of each side of the cube:

Actually, the coolest part is that he has lego legs for it.

@nutbastard: I here ya. I loved doing those in my CAD days, too. But industry terms do not go over well sometimes in the general public that's on Gizmodo, hence the first line in my first post. Not even sure if Adam meant the industry term definition in the article. You got guys jumping at the chance to talk about durability of all Apple products when this is an art piece.
Not knocking Apple or the poster, just finding the humor in it all. Maybe "without a brain" was too harsh of a statement. Maybe.

Doesn't require heat, but when the epoxy cures it creates heat. Also stress and this sometimes destroys the electronics. I can see evidence that this was done in stages to reduce stress buildup.

i wanna do a sculpture made out of some digital calipers that bend around in order to measure itself. now THATS art!

@TKWarrior:
"Blown Up" or "Exploded" is industry lingo for an assembly drawing that shows all relavent components seemingly suspended in air. if my boss wants an exploded view of something, i start getting excited, since of all types of assembly drawings there are, exploded is by far the most interesting and pleasing to work on.
@Reilao:
yeah dude. just mix and pour. no heat required.
