iPhone 1.1.2 Firmware: What You Need to Know
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:17 AM on November 10, 2007
The iPhone 1.1.2 Firmware just hit last night while you were out shooting drugs into your eyeballs, but here's what you need to know about it in the harsh, sober light of day. Long story short, you should wait until upgrading unless you're Gérard Depardieu.
Availability: As of right now it's still not available on iTunes (in the US), meaning if you really want to update you're going to have to manually download the firmware yourself.
New features: Foreign language support, including UK English, French, German and Italian. A battery status indicator in iTunes is all you get other than that.
Brick status: Jailbroken but non-unlocked phones are upgrading without any trouble.
Jailbreak status: Supposedly jailbroken using an as-of-yet unnamed method, but not actually applicable (released) to any phones yet. Consider it not jailbroken for any practical use. There are reports of downgrades from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1, however, in case you accidentally update your phone and want to revert. This hasn't been available to the public yet, so don't count on it being a safety net for you.
SIM Unlock status: Users report their phones re-locked after update. No news on unlock yet from either iPhoneSIMFree or the dev team.
Who should update right now: People in the US on AT&T who need foreign language support for some reason (like writing emails in French or German or Italian), but don't need third-party applications. Everyone who actually needs foreign language support probably lives outside the US, and therefore need SIM unlock to use their phones. In that case, you should not upgrade until a jailbreak and unlock has been released.
What's in it for iPod Touch: It actually supports adding and editing Calendar Events natively, without a patch. Although considering that you lose third-party applications and jailbreak status in exchange for a feature that you could already enable via a simple patch, it's not quite worth it.
Thanks to Tuaw comments for supplemental info.

@Narual:
am i the one that called the people who choose NOT to "hack" their phone with useless 3rd party apps "DUMBASSES"?
next time you choose to jump in on things atleast take the time to know what it is about. avoid looking like a real "DUMBASS". trying to jump on someone for responding to being called a dumbass just makes you look like an idiot. not the fact that you have 3rd party apps on your phone....

@jakebathman:
And if it weren't for these naughty, naugthy people breaking their license agreement and installing contraban, then Apple could focus on building quality applications instead of fighting the hackers.
(Or, conversely, Apple could let the third party code stay on the device and get people to stop using it by writing better applications. But, clearly it is more fun to brick phones.)

@izim1: So you don't use them. Fantastic. That's great. Most of the apps are, as you note, not terribly useful. But acting as though people are idiots because they happen to like them? Go go internet tough guy?
Personally, I use the voice recorder app a lot, I find it very handy for recording thoughts and ideas, and I used it recently quite extensively while traveling to record assorted ambience (street musicians, waterfalls, coqui frogs and cicadas, etc.)

@Carbonfly: *sigh* What's wrong with longer ringtones? I *like* having a ringtone of an entire song... It may not all play when someone calls me, but it does when I use it with the alarm clock function.
I have the phone docked and hooked up into my old JBL creature II ipod speakers, with the volume turned up nice and loud... no more sleeping through calls and alarms.. but it's nice to wake up to a good song and have it keep playing. :)

This needs to be added to the update....
CUSTOM RINGTONES are back! This has bee confirmed over at macrumors. Changing an AAC song to m4r will allow you to sync custom ringtones to your iPhone without any hacks or jailbreaking. The file also needs to be under 30 seconds long to work.
1. Create a ringtone as mp3.
2. Import into iTunes.
3. Convert to ACC.
4. Rename extension to m4r.
5. Drag the file into the ringtones folder.
Have Fun!

Show me a native app that isn't a frigging video game (I stopped playing those the day I discovered boobies) and that's actually usefull to grown people...sure a Steve jobs bobblehead that mumbles "boom" is glorious and all, but until you guys(hackers *snicker*) can actually get something REAL like video recording or flash player on the damn thing do everyone a favor and get your heads outta your asses when posting comments :)

@Buford T. Justice:
Let me get this straight. People who don't hack their phones because they have to have extra apps now and can't wait a few months for SDK Apple-supported apps are 'dumbasses'?
What does that make people who bitch/whine about getting 'screwed' by minor Europe-targeted updates released with no Apple fanfare with absolutely no stated value to them in the first place?
I can't wait for the SDK so hopefully people will quit whining about how Apple broke their hacked phones by *gasp* releasing an update!!! The horror!!!

Is the update so unsubstantial that it doesnt have enough changes in it to brick unlocked phones? Or is Apple playing nicer with this one?

My phone's been alot more buggy since 1.1.1.. not sure if that's because the custom apps are less stable or the firmware itself.
I'd probably dump the jailbreaking if I had a way to add my own ringtones (not just itunes stuff) and a voice recorder. The only other thing I really use much is iBlackJack. And Labyrinth when I'm trying to show people just how flipping cool the iphone is. :)

Any chance they secretly fixed the bug that causes Safari to crash so much? I've noticed it's either some JavaScript call or a certain type of image that crashes it the most.
Also be nice if the phone gave you some heat warning before it crashes iTunes on you. Whenever the phone gets to hot it just crashes everything you try to do, be nice if the said "hey I'm hot, please stop using me, thanks."

Seriously, 1.1.2 was a generous version number to give this update. Should have been 1.1.0.1. Give us something a little more worthwhile, Apple! How about tossing us a native game through iTunes? 4 months and all we have is web-based Bejeweled clones and other drippy-slow games? It's no wonder jailbreaking has become so popular.

>> Everyone who actually need foreign language support probably live outside the US
Cuz, you know, not like there are any foreign language speaking people actually living in the states who need/want to communicate with other foreign language speaking people also living in the states. Nope.
And for people complaining the lack of Oohs and Aahs in the firmware update. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. Does every firmware update have to be a slew of new features to keep you fucktards happy?
This firmware is obviously is the minimum amount of change they needed to add to the iPhone for the European launch. So they add international language support, and threw in one or two minor things that happened to be working already. What the fuck is wrong with that?
Oh, yeah, of course. You would've preferred it if they didn't release something as minor as this at all, and you would've been fine waiting another 3 months before v1.2 came out with substantial updates. In the mean time, all the Europeans would've have had international language support on their phones, but of course, you wouldn't have bitched about that at all.

Ever since 1.1.1 my iphone has been much slower on the take...long pauses when hitting SMS or the Phone icon. Pretty annoying. I thought I read yesterday here that this update had "sped up" some users phones? Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

@jakebathman:
No, you're not the only dumbass utterly missing the boat and missing out on the mass of great third party apps out there.
@kapila:
If you don't do a restore and just do an upgrade it's worse than that; the third party software will still be there, it'll just be inaccessible. So it may screw something up and you won't be able to get to it!
As for downgrading... I would love to have a 1.1.2 phone to try it on. I've successfully taken a b0rked 1.1.1 phone that wasn't bricked but was half-upgraded before AnySIM errored out. I was able to totally reflash the baseband back to stock along with 1.0.2 firmware, then apply the 1.1.1 firmware and jailbreak from there. Worked perfectly.
Given that you can get the thing into secret-recovery-mode (power off connected iPhone with iTunes open. Then hold power and home for 10 seconds, then let go of power at EXACTLY 10 seconds while still holding home. iPhone display will stay off but iTunes will show iphone in recovery mode. Shift-click on Restore and load the firmware of your choice that you've previously downloaded. Done.)
I'd think you can load on any firmware you wish. Once you get that done, you can erase the baseband and do what you like with putting on an older version. At this point, I think it's safe to say we totally own the phone even if we can't apply firmware updates beyond 1.1.1. I'd LOVE to get ahold of a bricked phone to play with. I'd think it could easily be recovered thusly.

im a little confused about the whole bricking thing.
if im on AT&T and only have 3rd party apps on my phone will upgrading to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 still brick my phone or will it just take of the 3rd party software?

terminal.app is so worth jailbreaking a phone for. Of course it depends on your job, but being able to telnet into work from anywhere is a nice feature. And light on the data waller as well.
