Intel Penryn Arrives In 16 Flavors for Desktops and Servers
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 8:00 PM on November 12, 2007
The wait's over: Penryn is here, as promised, in 16 flavors. On the high-end desktop front is the no-stranger-to-us 3GHz quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (seen on Lenovo's newest Thinkstations) which runs a not-so-low-power $1000 in bulk (1000 chips or more).
We've also got 12 quad-core Xeons ranging from 2 to 3.2GHz with 1333Mhz or 1600MHz frontside bus options, as well as a triplet of dual-core Xeons that run up to 3.4GHz, but with half the L2 cache (6MB) of the other Penryns. The dual-cores also have a 30-day wait.
The cheapest Penryn you can score appears to be the $177 1.86GHz dual-core E5205 Xeon with a 1066MHz FSB. Quad-core wise, it'd be a 2.0 GHz E5405 Xeon for $209. All of those prices are given in bulk, too. So, race ya to Newegg? [Intel]

@RalphWiggum:
HEY. Ask not what Vista can do for you, but what you can buy for Vista.

So when will Vista be good enough to rationalize building a new rig with one of these?

And we just started getting Dell 1950s with Xeon E5345 at 2.33GHz. Oh, the huge manatee!

@RalphWiggum:
Since it was introduced 1 year ago. It runs as expected without any problems.
If you like, you can wait until Windows 7 comes out somewhere in 2011 ~ 2012.
In the meantime just buy yourself a MAC and don't use the move command so you don't loose your data.
OKY DOKEY?

This chip was named after Penryn, California where the chip was developed. Penryn is about 30 minutes east of Sacrmento.

@RalphWiggum: Who needs Vista? Wanna make XP run like Vista? Simply install some cheesey desktop enhancements, crank your firewall all the way up to "annoying as hell", remove half your ram and randomly delete a bunch of files so half your programs don't work. Whamo! Instant Vista!

I've been following the processor market for a while, about 3 months. I intentionally waited until today to make my purchase. Thanks Giz for giving me the heads-up!
I expected the new QX9650 to be somewhere around $1,500 when it was released today like the QX6850 was a few months ago. I was happy to discover that the QX9650 could be had for $1150 so I jumped on it.
I need a lot of horsepower for the work I do out of my house... plus, it's going to make a killer gaming machine!
