Instructables: Copy a Key Using a Coke Can
Posted by Brian Lam at 6:57 AM on November 21, 2007
Instructables has a neat if dangerous tutorial on how to quickly make a key copy by tracing the metal from a Coke can. It's pretty obvious, and with that seed planted in your mind, there's probably no need to read the instructions.
Let me go one step further and remind you that you can copy a key for like two bucks at the hardware store, and that combining scissors, a key, and the edge of a shiv of aluminium can, this tutorial might as well be titled "How to lose a finger." Also, entering someone's home with a key copy is probably still considered unlawful entry, regardless of the lack of shattered door frame. Having said that, I will try this later and let you know how it goes. [Instructables]

You also can always use sledgehammering as a last resort.

Raking only works on very low end locks... Bumping! That's much more useful!

@Magnoliaboy: Yeah, it's fun and useful. I've picked many of my friends Apt and business doors when they accidentally got locked out.
At least I THINK they were their Apt's and businesses.

Picking locks is my favorite hacker past time activity.

here's my instructable on how to get into your apt after losing your keys while 'out on the town' :^)
scan nearby gutter for a length of metal left behind by a street cleaner. get two if you can find 'em. put both into lock, put tension on the one (in the direction your key usually turns to open the door) and with the other one gently but firmly (and repetitively) stroke the key teeth with it, keeping tension on the cylinder with the other piece the whole time.
voila. zee door is open, izz it not?

Or you could just run down to the nearest locksmith and have him duplicate the key for you, since you obviously have it in your possession. Can't do that and need to 'sneak' a copy from the real owner? Try using some wax or clay to make an impression of it. It's way faster than trying to photocopy it or trace it.

Umm... It's not tracing. The Instructable tells you to photocopy the key at 1:1 ratio and affix it to a thin sheet of metal (soda can or whatever) and cut around the image of the key to produce your facsimile.

od damni ... Because o his a icle I los a ine... Why did I no wea lo es? Which in e did I lose? ;)
Never thought of trying this, but I don't mind spending the couple of dollars to have a real copy made, instead of risking my hands, and then my lock with a flimsy piece of metal. Imagine getting the coke key stuck in your lock and having to explain to a locksmith as he laughs his ass off and then takes $100 from your dumbass. $2 is a bargan.
