Harmonix iPod Guitar Hero Game Lets You Use Your Own Music
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:41 AM on November 7, 2007
Not content to dominate living rooms with their upcoming Rock Band music title, Harmonix has made a Guitar Hero-esque iPod game called Phase that can take your own music and lay down a rhythm game on top. The game costs $5 and needs the iTunes 7.5 update we told you about earlier. Although you may be tempted to smash your iPod on the ground after a stunningly good set of Paint it Black, we advise you to just quietly celebrate your rock god-ness. So... would this work with an iPod Touch?

That's somewhat cool. So the game actually uses rhythm and not note charts? That's pretty nice.

Playing guitar hero/rock band with your own songs would be cool, but just like singing Karaoke with the lead vocals still in feels kind of pointless, rhythm games where how well you play has no bearing on what you hear is never as good.

This is what Guitar Hero needs. My roommate and I were talking last night about how cool it would be if we could download/purchase more songs or put in our own that it would generate the keys for. If they can do this for crap hardware like the iPod, why don't they for these power house gaming machines?

@Altanader:
That would make sense. But what about songs with odd time signatures and tempo changes and all that jazz?

I know my computer can extract a BPM but I don't know how it would discriminate notes and playable uhhh......

Wouldn't it just be like, a beat or something?

So wait....it just detects the rhythm of the song and makes stuff for it? Or do you have to make your own marks? That's confusing...
Confusion FTW.

This is a DMCA Takedown Notification: You are repurposing music files (heretofore called "MP3s") beyond its original license and thus, just like iPhone ringtones, you are required to pay $1.00 per song.
But because you haven't already licensed the songs, you will be sued under the Jammie Thomas "enabler" precedent whereby being an "enabler" of copyright infringement is punishable by death (or the ruining of your life as you know it, or assigning your soul to us upon expiration, whichever we deem appropriate). If you immediately settle out of court however, we will accept a settlement $100k per infringement.
PS: Now available for pre-order: Britney Spears box set, release date set for 1 year after she has her fourth kid.
