Google Gadgets For Dashboard Available Now, Fairly Unnecessary
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:00 AM on November 30, 2007
The Google Gadgets Dashboard integration we told you about yesterday is here, but the bad news is that you'll need to install Google Desktop to use it. With Spotlight, (pretty great) Widgets, and other applications already native to OS X, is there really a need for Google Desktop just to use Google Gadgets? If you just want that functionality, you can actually get it separately as well. But if you swear by Google as a platform, check out the video to see what you're getting. [Google]

You can also download just the Gadget functionality without the full searchable desktop stuff (provided by Spotlight already). Just click the "choose your own features" link and uncheck the top checkbox beside "Fast and easy search". Its just that easy - and they really are fun.

Hmmm... Google Desktop and Gadgets for Mac OS X.
Gotta love the direct competition from Google especially when Eric Schmidt is sitting on the board.

A 60 second video with 15 seconds of filler to show off a product that adds nothing to a platform that has this niche filled nicely. It looks like Marc of the Mac Team is working in Mountain View based solely on his ability to bullshit his supervisors into thinking that he has something good to offer.
I say they should give him an empty box for his personal effects as a reward for his hard work.

Is Google still sending your indexed folder contents to their servers like the Windows version?

I can't believe I'm the first to mention this.
How long until google goes after apple for bundling spotlight or maybe even dashboard with OS X just as they did with MS in Vista. To google instant search (MS version of spotlight) is middleware and isn't a part of the OS even though it's just a better version of search that's been in all OSes for decades and even though it was MS that invented instant search and first debuted it as a feature of Vista in 2003. Then MS announced a backporting (MS has done this with other features of Vista as well) for XP before Google announced anything for Desktop search.

@danielsmi: Wasn't Spotlight around before Goggle Desktop? If so prior art could be invoked and Google would be screwed. If not, then ignore me.
This message will self destruct in 5 seconds...

Google Desktop and Gadgets would be IMMENSELY more useful if it could be run under OS X 10.3.

@bishopneo: Tiger came out in April 2005 and Apple announced spotlight after MS did in June 2004. Google released Google desktop search in Oct 2004 before Apple. But since the Google CEO is a member of the Apple board I don't see them trying to go after them plus there haven't been any Anti-trust claims against Apple in the OS arena.

Google Mac Team, as long as you're writing programs that mirror apps/functionalities that come with the Mac, why don't you get your rears in gear and bring me Picasa?
