First Video: Bug Labs Powers Up Its Modular Open-Source Device
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 7:28 AM on November 20, 2007
Today, for the first time, Bug Labs CEO Peter Semmelhack is showing off a genuine powered-up prototype of the modular, open-source consumer-electronics device. Want a camera? Snap it on. Want GPS? Go for it. Here you see him attaching touchscreen LCDs, motion sensor, camera, 3G wireless LAN and GPS. It's powered up, and the PDA app works (as you can see in the gallery), but Bug isn't showing us full functionality yet, so for that you will have to stay tuned. [Bug Labs]

Jason - that part comes with the combo voice recorder and lost key finder. Saw it on HSN the other night.

How about a laser projector module... would be great for mobile professionals.

That's a good point Joseph -
However, I think this is playing to a different niche...
Sure, Paris isn't going to want one, but geeks and nerds would probably drool. I personally love the idea, and the looks dont really turn me off. Hell, my blackberry sports a custom duct tape skin, with velcro mounting patch, and business card pocket! (more duct tape)

Wrong. This competes with Lego Mindstorms, not RAZR2s.

In this day an age, presentation is just as important as functionality. This thing looks ugly and will never gain traction until they figure out a way to make it look "cool." I mean the Motorola RAZR sold like crack cocaine, and it was no more functional than a Motorola v400 which was out for almost 2 years before the RAZR came out. Why? Cuz it was thin'.

@Rothman,
Welcome to last week.
Joking, this is pretty cool. Now, build me a desktop with this! Post-haste!

It's a good concept, but not quiet ready for production. First of all its HUGE! And this is coming from a man who would willingly carry a TMobile Ameo if he could afford it. Secondly, there is so much wasted space on those modules. Why does a camera lense need 4 square inches of space? You could fit 4 smaller modules on that space, one of them being a camera.
Good concept though. I hope it goes somewhere.

I don't understand fully either how this will catch on. I've mentioned this before, but virtualcogs.com does the exact same thing. VC seem to more target quickly developing proof of concepts and integration into "clean" end products rather than something people take and really want to use on a daily basis as-is. I think the former is the better/correct approach to open-source HW.

@Joseph: Yea, good example, coz the RAZR was actually a completly crappy underspeced phone.
I dont rly like this product, needs: bigger screen(s), and a better look.

I was thinking more like the modules Handspring used for their handhelds long long ago.

@Brian Lam: I could see certain types of businesses being interested in this, but only the very 7334 haxxors would go near this as a personal phone... And probably not even them.

This is more about building hacks into this device. Like, being able to setup a geotagging car alarm that detects motion and uploads to flickr over EVDO when people get too close to your car.
Get it?

clunky piece of junk. you will just spend a fortune on add-ons and you wil loose half the pieces. now you need a purse to carry this around???

This is way cool but they need to make it smaller. At this point only hardcore gadget people and computer people would love this. Most people wouldn't see its Genius and go get the iPhone instead.

bravo, this is a idea that has been a long time coming, a true open source device that can be converted into a pc, phone, gps, pda, video camera, etc.
