Dude, Get a Dell...PlayStation 3
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:25 AM on November 7, 2007
Most people don't think "I'll go to Dell!" when shopping for a PS3, but according to Dell's current deal, they really should. While the 40GB PS3 will run you $399 at most stores, Dell's offer packages a free HDMI cable and copy of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (one of the biggest releases of the season for the platform). All in all, you are getting about $80 in freebies without signing up for special high rate credit cards, Good Housekeeping magazine subscriptions or whatever crap vendors are trying to sell you. @PaleRider: I don't want to seem close minded but what your saying is totally opinionated. I for one hate the 360 Controller as its way too bulky. Your also forgetting that games don't add up to how much better a system is. Yeah its a plus but it doesn't come near certain issues. For one, the 360 is built horribly. Even newly released 360's are failing after all of this time, and whether you attach a 3 year warranty on the product, it doesn't excuse the poor build. Another note you need to remember is that some people don't run on PC's so the whole media center feature becomes totally useless in that sense.
@Mike from Boston: From what I hear, you can land a PS3 60 GB from Ebay or Craigslist for around $400 to $450 and if your lucky, you can get one in the $350 range. I'll keep an eye out if I happen to come by one for your reference.
@SleepingGiant: Exactly my point.

@CruJones:
Thanks again everyone for all the help. I am leaning towards the PS3/60gb, and my next question is, what ballpark figure is a good price?
Also, thanks everyone for not complaining about me about hijacking this thread!

I just sent in my 360 for repair. I've already sent in four before this one. I've never had a single problem with my PS3. Sony's hardware is superior. I know the PS3 game library is limited, but at least the games/hardware work. The 360 may have killer apps compared to the PS3, but what's the point if the 360 locks up 20 minutes after you begin to play. :(

there is a couple developers that have already said they have filled a blu-ray disc even, cant remember who, but i check out 360 and ps3 fanboy site and seen it on there. with addition of high def gaming and increasingly bigger maps, and more features in games it's only a matter of time for them to need the bigger discs. the controller thing is debatable, i do like the 360 controller, but i like the ps3 controller more, they are pretty close to the same though. i like the 360 and they do have more games as of right now no doubt about it. but one of the things with that also is that pretty much every game you can play on the pc you can also play on a pc, halo 3 will be on it eventually. and as far as streaming goes, definately a cool feature but i have no use for that as i dont listen to a lot of music unless i'm in a car, i also like that you can connect your zune to it, but i think the ps3+psp connectivity is cooler.
also live is better than the PS network but really their network is good enough for me.
either way if you are a gamer you cant go worng with either one of these, box has more games but after this christmas and early into next year they both will have a good line up of games.
the thing that the 360 really has going for it right now is the amount of gamers compared to the ps3. i have a bunch of friends with a 360 and can play games with them, while i dont know a single other person that has a ps3.

Definitely get a 60GB PS3 if you can get your hands on one for a good price. You won't be disappointed.

@reebs82: Xbox360 is so much more useful than a PS3 though. It has alot more games, a more comfortable controller, it streams media through WIN Media Center edition from my PC easily and without hassle. Granted the PS3 does have Blu-Ray, if you look at the history of games and more specifically the size of the games on PS2 and Xbox even, no game developer has ever used the whole disk for gameplay, only for cut-scenes and the like. I will eventually get a PS3 but only when I can justifiably do so. For now the 360 + my PC is more than enough.

Not to quibble...but the 40GB has no PS2 BC, but I believe it'll play PS1 games just fine.
I'd assume most people worried about BC have a larger PS2 collection than PS1...but I figured it's worth mentioning.

I saw this deal yesterday on Passwird.com and that said it was for Canada only - they will NOT ship to the US. Oh well, Christmas is nearly here so Im sure more and more deals will be popping up soon enough.

halo 3 is a great game dont get me wrong but as far as multiplayer goes i like warhawk over halo even though halo has some great multiplayer as well. even without blu-ray i'd still want a ps3. it just makes it that much more valuable than the 360. i like that the discs can hold alot more info than the 360's discs so in the future when they have to have 2-3 discs a game, the ps3 will be able to fit it on just 1. plus it has built in wifi, which i use all the time. not only that but you can run linux on it if you so desire. and i dont hear about ps3's failing 30% of the time. them are just a few reasons why the ps3 is better. the reason to get a 360 over a ps3...halo, and maybe HD DVD if that's something you want to add on for 170 bucks.

Whats funny about the PS3 is that it takes some sort of freeby something in order to get people to even THINK about buying one. I will get one in the future don't get me wrong, but until there is some solid games I will continue my wtfpwnage on some Halo3 thank you.

@Mike from Boston: Hi Mike, I was in the same situation as you. I sided with a Sony PS3, only because of the quality at hand. A lot of great games branch out in the next few months so you will see a lot of great titles finally hitting shelves for the system. I was back and forth on the Xbox 360 but I just cant find it in myself to drop the cash on something with a poor quality build. Game wise they are identical (the 360 and ps3) at least from what I have seen. I also support Blu-ray more than I support HD-DVD although both formats drive me nuts in the end.
For me it was worth the drop on a 60 gb PS3 (you can find them on ebay / craigslist) and if your not worried about playing PS2 games, youll be perfectly fine with the 40 gb. As noted before by REEBS82, you will be able to upgrade the harddrive whenever you feel like it with a 2.5 Laptop Drive.
On a side note, I own a Wii as well. I find myself rarely playing it but when people come over, everyone wants the Wii over the PS3. I believe same goes for the Wii over 360. People get more interaction with the wii when in groups so it adds to the fun.
Hope this helps you out.

Yeah, the 60GB model is still the best all around deal. Wifi, multiple card readers (we use this all the time to look at our SD-card photos), back-compat and a bigger hard drive. Get one while they're still around.

Better deal: 60GB PS3 that IS backwards compatible, $499 minus $100 rebate at Hastings. $100 rebate's better than the crap free movies you get at BB or CC anyway.

@mike
if you want a real gaming experience dont get a wii. unless you are getting it for kids i suppose. almost every game is centered around kids. xbox 360 has a pretty good library of games out but dont see many good exclusive titles coming out soon, and is a good console. but if you buy one of them get it from a best buy or some where that you can pay for the in store warranty so that if it dies like 30% of every 360 has done you can exchange it right in the store, you dont have to wait to send it into MS which can take a couple weeks. personally ps3 has much more value than the other 2 with all that is built in the biggest one is the blu-ray player which are about 400 bucks by themselves if you buy one. and the upcoming exclusive game library is looking outstanding. if you choose the ps3 i recomend uncharted drakes fortune, it looks like it will be an awesome game, and will be out soon.

no it should be plenty. and with the ps3 you can upgrade your hard drive any time you want, with a hard drive of any size as long as it fits in the slot. i havent done it but i hear it is really easy, and there are how to guides throughout the internets.

I have a question: I'm an older guy and haven't been into gaming since the first Mario Bros on Nintendo. I've been thinking about picking up a system and am leaning towards the PS3. My question is, is the hd space necessary? If I just want to play some games (I have a pretty suped up mac system for everything else) will I bum out with a 40gb drive?
Also, any platform recommendations are welcome (Wii also looks pretty cool, am considering that instead).
Thanks!

@slingblade: Aren't they hurting in computer sales? They've been declining for quite some time I believe. I think we'll see them diving more and more into different item sales to keep a more rounded business.

I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere, so this might be as good a place as any: What is the backwards compatability on the 40GB model?

@Mike from Boston:
I paid full pop for my 60GB PS3 when it came out and I haven't regretted it one bit so if you can find one on Craigslist or eBay for sub-$450, you'll be really happy. My co-worker just bought a brand new 60GB from our local Best Buy and they had a deal going where they gave him $100 off. That was a few weeks ago and 60GB supplies were low so I don't know if they would still offer that deal but it's worth checking out if you have a brick-and-morter Best Buy close to you. Good luck!!!
