I love green technology, especially when it doesn't involve me lifting so much as a finger. With the Cyber-Rain XCI, you can take control of your sprinkler system across eight zones and help conserve water and a little cash at the same time. Via a wireless connection with your PC, the Cyber-Rain can make adjustments to scheduled watering times using current weather data.
If the forecast looks like rain, the unit is smart enough to suspend operations. It can even optimise its schedule based on the changing seasons. @Atrocious: from the comments it appears there are at least few. I have over an acre so I rely on Mother Nature.

$300 of gadgetty goodness that'll fry in the first electrical storm of the year here in Tampa. If I can disconnect it from main power, it might live a season or two. In the mean time, $60 el-cheapo versions are less painful to replace.

I'm skeptical that we have the technology for something like this. By that, of course I mean the "weather forecast data" technology.

Heck yeah we do. I just put in a sprinkler system this year with an orbitz touch screen controller. Funny I actually considered how cool it would be to tie the schedule in with temperature, weather, sunlight differences through the season. You need to give each zone a factor related to exposer and what you are watering (plants vs lawn) but, this is right on target, Great idea!

Does the average Gizmodian even have a lawn? I mean...like outside? In the sunlight? *shudder*
Nature imposes itself upon us quite enough by making us get up off the couch to pee during Heroes, thankyou. I don't want to encourage it one bit more by doing anything to help it thrive right outside my window.
