Software
CG Tattoo Program Allows You to Try It Before You Buy It
Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:52 PM on November 15, 2007
For those of us who have gone into a tattoo parlor sober, the decision to be permanently inked can be a difficult one. Fortunately, computer graphics artist Loic Zimmermann has developed a program that will allow users to get a look at what a complex design might look like on a 3D figure. If this technology catches on, the possibilities for pushing the art form are obvious. Let's just hope Zimmerman can refine his software to include a program that illustrates what that naked chick tattoo on your chest might look like 30 years and 3 cup sizes from now. Does it include a function that will mock the human canvas for getting that 21st century version of "MOTHER" across a bleeding heart -- the tribal tattoo?

Woohoo! Software I can use that I'll probably need an 8800 GTX card for in order to get that 3D view!

Ah! Now it shows up! goddamit. 5 minutes after I got mine, I realized I had it laterally inverted. I knew something was wrong when I looked into the mirror and loved my tattoo.

absolutely flawless idea. i cant imagine a con for this concept other than possibly long image rendering times.

@AdmNaismith:
I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing. Of course, all they need is some scrolling text across the bottom that says "NOW=LOOKS COOL...IN 20 YEARS=LOOKS BAD"

Do they supply a forensics program to show you what it will look like in the future when you skin's all saggy and the ink bleeds?
Even if it looks good now, there's no guarantee you'll still like it in 2 yrs+.

Do you supply the photos with all that artsy fartsy lighting and background or is that part of the package?

I guess this 3D model didn't like his tattoo much... he couldn't even open his eyes and take a look at it.

@DanB: Classic. Tribal is 1998, for sure. Or, in 10 years, a full Japanese sleeve.

That's way cooler than my magic marker tattoo testing system. Mine is a tad cheaper though.

Good idea on paper , bad idea on practice.
1. Sellers usually don't like their buyers experience the remorse before they close the sale.
2. There is no robotic tattoo printer. It is human made, it will never look the same on you as on the screen.

Guy #1: Computers? Bah! Back in my day we got tattoos the old fashioned way...drunk & by a fat guy names Tony. We trusted Tony, cause he would hurt us otherwise.

Actually he did not create any software. He just did a digital scan of himself, then imported the model into Maya cleaned it up and then into z brush and refined the details and texturing. Even so he did do a very good job.

ok. my comment got lost for some reason.
Just to correct this fancy idea of an automated solution.
THIS IS NOT TRUE.
I did it the way you would do a CG double for a film or whatever. This was a good way to simulate and design my tattoo, as well as a good way to show my skills in CG for future job.
Glad you like anyway.
The real one, after 19h of work, is pretty close to the CG one.
CHEERS.

Hi,
just thought I should correct this fantasy idea of an automated solution.
indeed, HKSPOWERS, This all all made "by hand" using the method you mentioned.
I did this for the tattoo purpose as well as for me, as a personal CG challenge to test my skills and interrest some potential employeers.
After 19h of suffering, all I can say is that the real one is freaking close to the CG one and the method is pretty cool.
Thanks for the interrest. Cheers

I waited till I was 46 to get my first tattoo. That was ten years ago. I wouldn't care if I did end up as a multicolored saggy old bag but the truth is, I bet I end up looking a lot better than some of the kids who have punched multiple holes in themselves already. :)
