CellQ Phone Service Promises an End to Amusement Park Lines
Tired of waiting two hours in the blistering heat to get on Space Mountain? If the folks at CellQ have their way, you could skip the annoying lines (friggin' Disney) and book your place. While you wait for a phone call notification that it is your turn, you can feel free to roam around the park. When the call does arrive, you are free to take your spot whenever you choose. The service also claims that it can recognise personal ride preferences, and help reunite parents with lost children.
That's all well and good, but what happens when a whole mess of people have this service? What happens if they show up at the same time? How many fistfights will take place when CellQ users skip to the front and snicker at the poor bastards waiting in line? It's a good idea in theory, but my guess is that some major problems would erupt as the service grows more popular. Pricing information has not been made available. [TRFJ]

There is (or used to be, quite a while ago), in Florida at least, already something like this as part of the park. You get there, the line is full, you put your park ticket into a machine, it barfs up an 'appointment' ticket. You take it, go about your business, come back at the appointment time and go right to the front of the line.
It's been some years since I was there, so I don't know if it's still there or not, but it made for much more enjoyable rides... you still wait, you just do it somewhere else while doing something else.

@Hitchcock: Hey, Disney is expensive! Still, I do recall hearing about this somewhere. The only difference is that this technology could be used in numerous parks. May even have applications in other situations where lines are a problem - if it works that is.

Sean, you need to get out more. Disney (and other parks) have been offering a similar service for years. Disney's is called FastPass, and they have special signs telling you how long the wait is for the ride or when you can come back using FastPass. Next to the sign is a little box that you can slide your ticket into and it prints out a receipt with a time window that you can come back during and skip the majority of the line.
Works great, especially on newer rides. The only difference with this system is it calls your cell phone instead of issuing a paper ticket.
Although I'm not sure how this will work at Walt Disney World. They've intentionally limited the cell phone providers who can provide service on their property.

Six flags has some kind of pass that lets you in the front of the lines, for 5 rides, for $15. Anyone's time is worth more than that, especially for a one hour line.

Yeah, instead of getting one of those pagers at a busy restaurant, they could just call or text your cell. That would also eliminate you having to be near the restaurant, since those pagers have a limited range.
Wait. Let me take that back. Restaurants would hate this cause then they couldn't steer you to the bar to wait. Maybe the DMV? Cause that could happen!

Two summers ago, when I was being wooed by a big NY law firm, they took us (summer associates) to Six Flags NJ. They bought us all super-passes that let us skip the entire line, at every ride, whenever we wanted. We just walked up the exit ramp, the people who ran the rides would see the special holographic stickers on our shirts, and we'd hop right on and smirk at all the poors we were cutting who had waited in line for two hours.
I think the passes were like $300-400 each. Good times.

The Six Flags pass is called FlashPass. I think it's only about $50 to skip most of the line. You can make a reservation but then go wait in person on another line. Totally worth it; last time I did this I estimate I got to ride three times as many popular rides as if I were stuck on one line at a time. It does involve some strategic running around in order to make the reservations fall into place as you're hopping around lines, but if you do it right you can score nearly back-to-back-to-back rides on the hottest coaster. The law firm Pender describes probably bought the VIP pass, which lets you cut the entire line just by showing up.

I'd say what that girl is doing is a fast pass. No way Mickey is stopping her now.
