Buoy in a Keychain Inflates Airbag-Style
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:26 PM on November 27, 2007
Floating keychains are common, but this is the first time we have seen something like the Waterbuoy: you chain it to whatever valuable object and, if it falls into the water, the contact will fire up a gas valve that will instantly fill a balloon capable of lifting 1kg. The water will also activate a high-intensity LED so you can see it at night. Warning note: never store a keychain in your swimming trunks' pocket. Or else. [Besportier]

Pretty awesome idea. Might be great for boat keys. However, I gotta wonder if it is a waste of money after an accidental plunge, overspray, or rain. Can you reload it? It also would be nice if they could figure out a way to make it even more compact.

@MrSmoofy: Stop coming here then. It seems to me that if you already had seen this, then you could have quickly moved onto the next article without even reading this. Personally, I hadn't seen it, so I'm glad they showed it. As for the device, it would give a whole new meaning to the phrase "is that a keychain in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" should you accidentally spill your drink on your pants at a party.

@mrsmoofy: Funny, I too get annoyed with Giz when they cover something that isn't really new. However, I think to most of us land-lubber geeks, this is cool and new, and I was glad Giz covered it.

GizWiz presented this product about a year ago. If you haven't heard that episode you really should.

Saw this on "dragon's den" (a uk tv show) the other night, the guy who invented it claimed it could be scaled up to rescue sinking ships!

Awesome idea.
Tie a couple to a survival kit in an orange Pelican case and you've got a real winner there!
