Awesome Homemade Flying Car Video Uses Balloons to Achieve Liftoff
Posted by Adam Frucci at 8:20 AM on November 28, 2007
I love this new trend of homemade videos with incredible special effects. We've seen a few of them before that deal with UFOs, and now a bunch of dudes went and made a video about attaching helium balloons to their car with predictably great results. This one used a crane as well as computer effects, so you might consider it cheating, but then again, I'd like to see you make something this cool with or without a crane. [YouTube]

If I was a cop that happened to be in the area, I'd find a way to bust them for having a 2k lb vehicle float dangerously around the neighborhood, since the strings can pop and the car can come crashing down on some poor fool that happens to be under it when it does.

They admitted that they got help from Ford to make this commercial.

About 200,000 balloons would be needed for a 2,200 lb. car. That's assuming a lot of impossible conditions could be met.

There is already a advert in the UK where people attach balloons to their cars to get rid of them.

@thistle.john: 1000x more ballons could probably lift 1lb more
you should watch mythbusters!

WOW, possibly the coolest video i have ever seen!
you say its all done with a crane, but you cant see the crane at all, also, well acted~
one problem, you would probs need 1000X that many baloons!

This was filmed in NZ, and the day after it was released on Youtube, the local media got hold of it and tried to find out who did it and if it was real.
The found out who: a marketing company, paid by Ford.
The how was only revealed at the end when one of the neighbours to the property explained how they had a crane blocking the street for most of a day.
Personally I like the floating car on Top Gear.

The trick is much simpler, and far more effective. ;)

Someone send this to Mythbusters. It's obviously fake, it took the Mythbusters more balloons to lift a girl under a hundred pounds. But I'm sure they would love to see how many balloons to actually lift a car.

Any of you catch that mythbusters where they had a 5YO girl do the same thing... it took about 5 times as many balloons as what is shown here to lift her off the ground.....
Of course this whole car things is *just for fun*(TM)

@Kaiser-Machead: Then I'd tie their asses to the balloons, and bid thee farewell.

@randotheking: Yup... they used even more (i think) to give a ride to a little girl (how lucky).
How about tossing the car over a blue sky (to use it as a blue screen) and make it look like it's flying? That would be awesome (unless you own said car)!

Brainiac, a show in the UK also lifted a ful grown man with helium baloons. They used about the same amount of weather baloons as the normal ones in this video.

Why float a car when you can float a person? Wouldn't it be funny if someone had actually tried something like this for real, used weather balloons instead, and floated up to 16,000 feet?
Wait a minute!

BULLSHIT! First off they are blowing with up with air which will give you no life, you need helium. Number 2 is that they tried this on mythbusters and they needed around 50 times the balloons these n00bs have just to life up a 5 year old child!
@ TRUEGOD exactly
@ FIZZYPOPMAN being on gizmodo I am surprised you don't watch mythbusters, they did this for real on the show!
I cant believe there are actually cockfucks who waste their time with this stuff. Mythbusters is totally different, but the guys on you-tube just have nothing better to do, nothing productive to do, how about contributing to society you douche bags! Man I dislike people like this.
