Apple's Son-of-a-Newton Might Be Asus Tablet PC
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 11:44 PM on November 6, 2007
Jesus told you that a MacBook touch might be coming and Matt Buchanan just showed you a new mock-up. Now CNet Crave UK has an inside scoop that Eee PC maker—and MacBook contract manufacturer—Asus will one day deliver an Apple tablet.
According to the story:
Apple Tablet will not be based on existing Asus designs such as the R1 [top]. It will come from a completely new blueprint, possibly based on the patent Apple filed back in May 2005 [bottom]. We're guessing it'll be based on Intel Core architecture, a tweaked version of Leopard, and have all the multi-touch, CoverFlow goodness we've seen in the iPhone and iPod touch.Apple, if you're listening, Jesus wants WiMax, too.
There, every answer you'll ever want to know ever—all that's left is a name: CNet's calling it an "Apple Tablet PC," Factory Joe called it "iPad," we were saying "MacBook touch" but damn if that doesn't just look silly. What do you want to call it? (Note: Son-of-a-Newton is already taken.) [CNet Crave UK]

On second thought, they should just call it Powerbook G5.

Personally, due to liking consistency, I would like to see a new, smaller model of the mini with the moniker "Mac nano", the iMac renamed "Mac classic", and the new tablet to be called the "MacBook Touch".
I realize that in this naming scheme the shuffle and Mac Pro would be odd ones out, but I can't imagine a need for an iPod Pro, or a Mac(Book) shuffle.
Oh, and on that note, why is Pro the only capitalized secondary name?

@gotsmart: I'm shackled to a desktop at work, but my personal computer is a Tablet PC, which I also use when tutoring math.

@Ericnet69:
My physics teacher uses a tablet PC to write notes (which he projects onto a screen) while he teaches the class. It's a pretty good idea because that way, he can answer problems right in from of the class and have the option to email the notes to an student who misses notes due to an abscence.
That being said, I wouldn't buy a tablet from Apple. I prefer XP.

My guess is that the picture is from MacWorld where the ModBook was introduced, to be sold by OWC ([eshop.macsales.com]), but never shipped.
I'll let ya'll infer whatever you want from this.

Well, the name "Newton" obviously was chosen because of "Newton's apple". So, what other figures have strong correlation with apples?
• Adam (or Eve)
• John, Paul, George or Ringo
• Snow White
• Walter (William Tell's son)
I dunno.... I kinda like Walter.
"You're not wrong, Walter. You're just an asshole."'

I thought the son-of-Newton was the iPod Touch.
I guess the Touch is too small and portable to truly be a Newton successor. A true Newton has to be too big to fit in a pocket, yet too small to be truly useful.
All kidding aside, i'm a big fan of the Newton and still have a MessagePad 120 kicking around. I lusted after a MessagePad 2000, which i think qualified as having the most technology-per-cubic-inch back in the day. I think it's only recently that smartphones and handhelds have begun to eclipse its stunning capabilities.
Does anybody actually USE tablet PCs anyway?

@Ericnet69: Thats very far from the truth. I would gladly purchase an Apple Tablet as it would benefit me in design, development and meetings with clients. I think we will see more and more touch tablet like devices in the near future and eventually I think they will be a general item.
@sumocat: Whoa! hah
@Broncoskip: Depending on what the surface is made out of, there will be an assortment of items that would most likely be made to accompany this product. A specially lined case to provide a soft interior against the screen, a plastic overlay to protect it from scratches and so on.

It could easily be a convertible tablet... And I'm not a doctor... I'm studying EE right now, and I like my R1F (the original Asus Tablet, which, for some inexplicable reason, is called the R1E in the newest update.... we're moving up letters, apparently). It only had one crazy niggling battery issue which was fixed with my second battery. I like it. Being about to convert handwriting into text is fun and useful, and so is being able to further my use of technology as a crutch to my lack of artistic ability (paper does not have an undo button, or a transform ability, or copy/paste, at least not in the cleanest sense).
On the other hand, if it has not been blessed by the hands of Wacom tablethood, multitouch is nothing more than a pretty little toy, to me.

it should be called IScratched, cuz how will you protect the screen when you cant fold it shut for transport?

@Ericnet69: True enough. Most people are not doctors, teachers, mathematicians, artists, linguists, editors, mobile professionals, or folks who otherwise have need for pen input and/or mobility when computing. On the other hand, why should the educated minority be as limited in their computing options as a moron who can't spell?

@Ericnet69: well obviously you won't be buying any sort of tablet pc any time in the near future.
Hell, if the price was right, I'd buy one. it would be nice to have something ultra-compact to take to meetings etc that wasn't a full laptop.

why do you need this, are you a doctor or somthing. I am usually sitting when i go on the computer and i dont need to rest it on my lap and have my neck hurt from looking all the way down. These things are only usful for people who carry charts around or stand around writing for hours. Everyone else in the world gets to sit down and write... If it has a fold out stand a small key board then it might be good. I dont see a point in the screen typing with tacfeed back because all it is is a wast of screen for keyboard which is expencive.

lets be reasonable apple if it doesnt have wimax we dont want it.
Actually you should make sure any device you put out in the near future
to have wimax. Except the iphone of course, the crappy deal with at&t
will hold that back until 2012.

My spouse uses a tablet computer in her government job to compile data for the consumer price index. When on the road she enters info on the touchscreen into forms. It's a Fujitsu that runs some ultra-secure version of Windows XP, and has a wireless keyboard and a stand-up dock for when she's at her desk and transmitting data to Uncle Sam. Great idea, as it replaced reams of paper in 10-pound binders, but in this case the execution is flawed, and you've never heard a lady curse so much like a merchant marine when she yells at the thing for numerous operating glitches.

I use a tablet PC everyday. I'm a designer who went paperless 3 years ago. A lot of my time is spent interviewing people and sketching. OneNote's ability to search my ink notes (without converting them to text first) and its note-synchronized audio and video recording are priceless.
No more big binders of notes and sketches. No more searching for that one thing someone said. Plus, with the ink searching, I only have to transcribe what I need to publish!
I use a Motion Computing LE 1600 - probably the best choice at the time. Still going great!
My interest in a Mac Tablet would be more as a personal information device, so if it were as big as a tablet, I'd probably stick with windows. If it's something more UMPC-ish (but with Apple's design sensibility), I might be interested.
