Nissan GT-R Multifunction Display Looks Like a PlayStation Game
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 7:33 PM on October 23, 2007
This is the interior of the new twin-turbocharged V6 2009 Nissan GT-R, a monster supercar, chicks-with-leather-and-attitude magnet and a wonder of engineering which we would probably only drive in the next Gran Turismo. Ironically, anyone who buys one starting tomorrow will be playing Gran Turismo too. All the time, in fact, since the multifunction display that is the star of its interior was designed with Polyphony Digital, the developers of the famous PlayStation GT games. And it shows, because it just looks awesome up close:
According to Nissan, the multifunction display monitors everything from engine coolant temperature to steering angle and longitudinal and lateral G-Force, which in my case will read something between "Wimpy" and "Drivetard." The panel can also display data recorded from your races to the supermarket, telling you how effective your driving is. If you are interested in the whole car, you can see Jalopnik's video showing Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn in japanese television. [Edmunds]

The front end and the headlights look like ass, but the rest of it (almost) make up for it (if I could afford the car, I could afford to change those).
Give it a regular 6 speed shifter and clutch, and this would be my new dream car.

@tyndago: yeah. manuals with no clutch pedal are t3h amazing, and in a paddle shifting set-up, computer controlled clutches own in a sports car, while having no clutch at all is more for economy cars, or automatics with a CVT mode (like my car).
@prodigal_son: agreed. the appeal of the old skylines was its wolf-in-sheeps-clothing style, where it could easily be made to push out massive power, but it looked clean and simple like any old weekend warrior car. too much of a modern look would kill it, but i have to admit the way the tail lights look flush now (compared to the old skylines, because they had regular lights with circle frames over them, while the new GT-R has circular light cutouts in the sheetmetal) is beautiful.

There are some R34's in the US. About 12 or so that were imported by Motorex. Autoblog had a link to Paul Walkers R34 that was for sale recently. They were looking for $140,000 for the car.
And to correct myself, clutches aren't going away, clutch pedals are. DSG, Zeroshift, SMG. They do it right, and do it much faster.

A lot of you dont get it, this car was always about a normal looking car, that could possibly be an everyday family car, that goes like a bat out of hell.
If this looked like a supercar (ferrari, lambo), it would be the worst skyline/gtr EVER..
Its awesome in every detail (cept the front end) and i want one so so bad.
@wezelboy:Its just the old skyline rear beefed up, they have been using it for so long, and its pretty much the hallmark of the car...

Two pedal is the future. Not realizing this is like saying you want to stick with your VHS player. It works, its fine, but its much better in the future. Clutches, and clutch pedals are a thing of the past.
The 2009 Nissan GT-R is coming stateside. June 2008. Sold at about $70,000. Its going to be fast. 0-60 in 3.5 , quarter mile in 11.7. 192 mph top speed.
The car is being shown in Japan today. A couple of hours away. It will be on sale in Japan around December.

do you think you could give me some information on getting an R34 into the U.S.? That would be a dream come true.

i heard this car is going to cost between $57,000 and $70,000 depending on how it's equipped. and yes, it's gonna have ATESSA ET-S (or whatever) all wheel drive that automatically adjusts between a 50/50 split and putting all the power to the rear wheels, or anywhere in between. and 4 wheel steering if i remember right.
looks wise, i love the back....to you it may look like a corvette rip off, but ask anyone who's seen the R32, R33 or R34 skylines and they'll tell you that rounded tail lights are the defining feature of the skyline's back end, and the new GT-R's tail lights look a lot cleaner than in previous skylines. the front and the sides i don't care for much, nissan should have kept it more similar to the R34 in those areas.
and this isn't a soulless japanese car. it's definitely on par with any porsche i can think of as far as luxury and personality go, performance wise it's better than the 911 turbo (proven on the nürburgring, as well as at laguna seca), and that multifunction display is pure hotness. the rest of the interior is OK, but this car is about mind-numbing handling (from the ET-S system and the 4 wheel steering) and more power than any japanese car before it, not about looks.

@Atelier: Are you kidding? You're listing Ferraris, perhaps some of the most sterile, precision-oriented cars as having more soul than the GT-R. Don't get me wrong - I love Ferraris. But come on. The Ferrari says "I'm faster than you can imagine." The GT-R says "I'm going to kick your ass and then go over to your mom's house and kick hers."

Yawn.
It is almost impossible to get excited over a soulless japanese car. Give me a Ferrari, Porsche or Aston any day.
Of course, 15 year old suburban kids with no taste or frame of reference will love it, especially in hideous colors like neon green and yellow.

@Colonel35: Have you actually been in a Viper? The interior bears an awful lot of resemblance to their truck line (same AC control dials)...and its awfully plastic-y in there. Same for the 'vette, although its interior is still nicely styled.
The question is: Would it really be a Japanese supercar WITHOUT a plastic interior? That's sort of par for the course for Japanese supercars....think STi, Evo, Supra, NSX, etc.

In re: the cheap plastic, I concur wholeheartedly, but the GTR competes well against other budget supercars (read: Vette/Viper) and pretty much any Lambo/Ferrari prior to 2000.

$80K is what the proposed list price will be, it will probably go for more than list
@ $80K you would think it would
.Look less like a converted family car
.have styling that will last past 2010
.have a decent interior
.and not ride like a lumber wagon like all current Nissans do
Pleaes, Nissan stylists. Please let Mitsubishi have that front end, it looks more appropriate on the EVO anyways.

I'm surprised the temperature control isn't digital Celsius/Fahrenheit. Other than that does anyone have 80K they'd be willing to give me?

@tayaya: My apologies for using the word "concept" instead of the words "creative idea for the interior." I've been following the GTR for a while now too.
Calm down.
I just want to know how much they're gonna charge for all that plastic. The tech is out-friggin-standing, but I gotta say, if they're gonna put a grown-up price tag on it, you have to have a grown-up interior.
I don't think this is going to be made for the $30k crowd. Which means it's going to take a swing at the upper eschelon of automobiles. All of whom have considerably less shiny plastic dripping from the interior.
The performance numbers and multi-display make me swolt with love.
However, that interior design does not.

YES! The GT-R is legendary, and to think we'll finally be seeing them on the streets here in the U.S. is very exciting. Maybe a little TOO exciting...
BTW, I love the display and the start button behind the stick!

It's funny how many people come here and post "Cool concept" or "too bad we'll never drive one over here in the US" without actually checking their facts first.
I'm excited at the prospect of getting a GT-R in this country without having to have the grey market import one. I've been for rides in several R33 and R34 Skyline GT-R models both here and in Japan, and it's a great car. I don't like the exterior styling on the new generation that much but it's alright because I can't afford one anyway, as this one's substantially more expensive than the previous models!
I really do like what they've done with the multi-function display though. I knew Polyphony was developing it, and now that it's been unveiled it really shows in that it's simple, functional, yet very easy on the eyes and elegant looking. Oddly enough, the instruments on the HUD in Gran Turismo 5: Prologue look identical to the ones here on the GT-R. Nothing like feeling like you're playing a video game on the way to work, hm?
Speaking of.... time for me to go see if I can drive this car again now in the demo of GT5 on my PS3. When they released the demo on Friday you could drive the car but it had black masks over the nose and tail, like they do on real cars when they test them to prevent spy shots from revealing too much, and there was no cockpit view. Last night, they made the car unselectable and put a shimmering red cloth over it in the showroom (and I have to say it was the most impressive, realistic looking cloth I've ever seen in a game or computer simulation). Today, the car should be fully unveiled at the same time they unveil it at the Tokyo Motor Show. Same goes for the new Subaru STi.

AAAAAHHHHH!!!! Sorry. Just had to let it out. Where and when can I buy one of these? Is this the mythical Nissan Skyline that never made it to the states? And it's now, finally coming here with all of these buttons, paddle shifter, dual-clutch, electronics goodies, etc? Damn! Is it AWD too? Let me go theck Jalopnik for more info.

Look at the previous GT-R model Skyline (R34) and you'll see they've had a state-of-the-art display on the dash before. I think the R33 might have had one as well.

Nice concept... I mean really cool, but I have to be a naysayer in regards to the plastic-ness. Especially the portion below the multifunction display, it looks like flat cheap plastic.
I like the car tho'!

@tyndago: The VHS analogy is flawed. It's more like comparing the clutch pedal to vinyl. There will always be aficionados who prefer it despite what the mainstreem and geek mod sheeple believe. ;)
