iPhone Nano or Cheap Chinese Knockoff?
Posted by Jason Chen at 7:00 PM on October 29, 2007
These shots originated over at Gadgetzone.nl, where they wonder aloud whether this is or isn't an upcoming iPhone Nano. Their source "implores" them that it really is the iPhone Nano and it originates inside Apple, but unless Apple's security broke down horribly between when the regular iPhone was in development and now, it's pretty unlikely. What is likely—and is also what Gadgetzone thinks—is that these pictures are of a Chinese knockoff MP4 player. You know what tells us that this isn't a real Apple piece of hardware? The cellphone charm tie slot on the bottom right, next to the headphone jack (after the jump). The real iPhone doesn't have it. [Gadgetzone via Unwired View]

These days it's easy to tell... If the site gets a takedown notice it's real. If Apple ignores them then it's not real.

@Joseph:
People were assuming that "silver button" you spoke of was just a raised plastic area with a speaker underneath.

@jawzxy: It wouldn't be too tiny. Remember the Nokia candybar phones that were really short but the mic could still pick up what you were saying?

It is fake. It is a chinese MP4 player. I have the unit in my office. Nice try. The bottom slot is the card reader, not an Apple connector. You will see this product from multiple suppliers starting in late December. FAKE.

The real question is, would anyone even buy an iPhone Nano? It'd be too freakin' tiny!

How were you able to conclude that this fake is Chinese?

I would guess that any iPhone "nano" would currently rest withing Apple HQ, where they probably don't have too many non-apple computers...

Haha its got a the main "home" button and then another silver button on it... if it was a phone, where would you hear the other caller from?

Of course it's fake, but even if it wasn't do you think all of Apple's Chinese manufacturers use Macs? Come on use your heads people

"Their source "implores" them that it really is the iPhone Nano and it originates inside Apple"
Take a look at that keyboard that should be the first clue that it didn't originate in Apple...I'm quite certain that if it did that it'll be pretty easy to track it back to that employee. Just look for the guy with the really bad, big, clunky PC keyboard from the late 80's.

Knock-off media player. What's with the raised, clear home button? And the raised chrome part (secondary button?) where the earpiece would fall?
@crazyindian: Chrome border = phone. If it was. Which it's not.

If this was the iphone nano im pretty sure that there would be a mac keyboard in the background and not a pc keyboard. :)

Just checked the gadgetzone site and it's confirmed that it's a knockoff MP4 player:

I think this is a nano-touch and not a nano phone. It looks authentic to me.

After thousands of claims to "leaked" iphone insider info, with Apple putting the smackdown on the BS, do you really believe this is a real iphone nano? I'll leave it up to you.

I'll see your "You know what tells us that this isn't a real Apple piece of hardware? The cellphone charm tie slot on the bottom right, next to the headphone jack. The real iPhone doesn't have it."
And raise you a "that's not just for charms, it's for lanyards, and the iPhone is a larger beast. Something like a lanyard would be useable on a smaller device".
Plus, if it's a knock off player, why have the dock connector, instead of a mini USB socket?
Unless it's an SD slot :/

It SHOULD be real.
The iphone is a little big for me, for a phone. Phone's should be small.

Gizmodo Staff: Apple Worshippers or PC Haters? No contest. I'm convinced you guys work for Apple and not Gawker Media. All you care about are iPhones and iPods and whether or not there are "fakes" out there.

Usually spyshots are fuzzy and taken very quickly, thus making them "spyshots". If this person truly had the iPhone Nano in their possession long enough to take more than five pictures, one including a ruler for scale, you would think that they would turn the thing on. That's the main give-away. Why didn't they turn the unit on? Because it would show a crappy Japanese/Chinese OS of a crappy MP4 player.

That was being remarked by the Dutch site as well. If it were internal Apple shots then the keyboard would have been Apple as well.
There are also doubts about the lack of picture of the rear, this should have an Apple on it. And the last point they bring up is the fact that the Home button is sticking up instead of being an indentation.
Fake in my book.
