Following its appearance at a Samsung dealer event in the Netherlands, the ultra-slim G800 slider is getting a bit of attention &mdash mainly because of its 5 megapixel camera with 3 x zoom and Xenon flash. And then there’s the small matter of the HSDPA and the micro SDHC card slot, making me think that the G800 will be Samsung’s mobile TV phone. More pics and specs below.
newVideoPlayer("flying_water_car_gawker.flv", 475, 376); Let us give thanks for firefighters and their mighty equipment. As well as putting out fires, rescuing people from burning buildings and being strong, brave and exemplary individuals, they can do special tricks with their hoses &mdash like this one: lifting a car using the extreme water pressure from eight (I think) of their hoses. Again, please. [Live Leak]
I. Want. This. I want to stomp down Fifth Avenue in it. I want to dance on the subway. I want to hitch-hike to California. And most importantly, I want to do a striptease out of this Master Chief Suit. Gizmodians, I will do this for you on video if you buy me this. I’m serious. Bidding closes September 20, so you know what to do. [eBay via OKfuture]
We went a bit moist and gooey earlier this year when we saw Samsung’sF700 in Barcelona. Now the touch-screen smartphone with 3-megapixel camera and QWERTY keyboard has got a release date in Europe and a carrier: November; and Vodafone. I’d take a punt on it hitting our shores in early 2008, though. Full specs, another pic and the press release after the jump.
Someone has modded two tablet PC screens and a DS so that the touchscreen functions of the DS work on the larger LCD screens. Using a pass-through device, the DS is able to transfer data back and forth, allowing for more than just a fancy display. It looks like you still need to use the buttons on the DS for games that require them, but for a game like Meteos, which is shown above, this thing looks pretty awesome. The creator also documented his process with photos, showing this device is no hoax. Thanks, Jeromy. [Jumbotron DS]
The Life Saver water bottle is a military grade water sanitizer that can make the dirtiest of water drinkable in seconds. The bottle not only filters out bacteria, but also takes care of viruses and water that has been contaminated by fecal matter. The creator, Michael Pritchard, initially came up with the idea after watching victims of Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami in Asia go for days without receiving clean water. There are others, however, that are interested in Pritchard’s invention.
After showing the bottle off at a defence conference in the UK, Pritchard sold all 1,000 of his $385 bottles in under four hours. Defense experts were impressed with the fact that it could filter 4,000 or 6,000 liters before the filter had to be replaced. An innovation such as this could have a significant impact if it ever reached the consumer market, not only being used as emergency gear, but for camping and travel as well. [The Register]
newVideoPlayer("slidingmount_gawker.flv", 475, 376);When we want to use our laptops in bed, we usually grimace through the third-degree burns or find some kind of laptop stand. This guy takes it one step further, creating a sliding laptop mount for his ceiling, complete with tracks and a power system to keep his unit charged as well. See the video to see what we mean when we say this is the laziest bastard we’ve seen in a while. [Instructables via Core77 via TechEBlog]
It’s been one of those thoughts I’ve often had. “Surely fibre should be able to deliver better speeds than copper?” Of course it can, but until now it just hasn’t. And now Bigpond has flicked the switch on 30Mbps downstream (1Mbps up) for Cable Extreme users to customers in “selected areas” of Sydney and Melbourne, which they put at over 1.8 million homes. Other Extreme users will still be getting 17Mbps / 256Kbps rates.
A few more provisos after the jump. But if you’re in the right spot, dreamy download speeds await. I’ll live with my 16Mbps line sync on ADSL for now, but I’ll certainly envy those with fibre to their door.
[UPDATE: Modem upgrade prices (discussed below) confirmed from $119.]
Things got pretty messy there at Aussie iPhone Unlock, and probably many other resellers who set up pre-orders for the iPhone SIM Free pay-for-play unlock software. IPSF got a few licenses out before the free unlock appeared, and suddenly their model of selling licenses to third-party resellers made sense. They were protected from a direct customer backlash as the delays saw people’s cash wasted on an unlock that arrived (and is still only just arriving) after a free option was live online.
This here is the world’s first Ferrari 360 Modena converted to a gullwing stretch limo. It’s 23 feet long, but with 400HP, goes zero to 60mph in about 6 seconds. These mods, and the extra 6 Recaro seats, cost £200k. Sounds like a deal to me. We’ve got one more photo of the gullwing in full splendor, but Gizmag, who broke the story, has a few more photos.
