Hands-on with the Philips Aurea (Verdict: One for the Boudoir)
10:25PM Addy Dugdale | Philips’ Aurea TV has been all over IFA, but what does its target market (Hey Lay-deez?) think about it. Well, while Jesus got a hunger for its form, Lindsay, Philips’ PR person, and I had a discussion about where we would put it if we had one. And the verdict? In our bedrooms. More »

Eyes-On Philips 132-inch Wow 3D Display (Verdict: It’s Not 132 Inches)
10:23PM Jesus Diaz | At Philips’ IFA booth we saw the 132-inch Wow 3D Display experience. Did we get wowed? Not really. First, it’s not a 132-inch single display, but 9 42-inch 3D panels. Even in optimal view position (you have to be in the center), the 3D effect it’s only good at some times. The rest you just get dizzy. The single 42-inch panel on its own was more impressive, specially with some airplane footage. The worst was LG’s 3D display, even more unbearable than Jacko’s Captain Eo. So far, the Hitachi GPS/Game-oriented display is the only worthy of a mighty 3D warrior. More »

Die Modden Squadden, or a Lesson in Bad Taste
10:00PM Addy Dugdale | There were coffins, toilets, underwater landscapes that had everything except Mario swimming around looking for coins, a box file, a bikini babe and this thing. Honestly, wherever I go in my nightmares, Hello frackin’ Kitty is there, waiting. Pass me the chainsaw, Helmut, and make it snappy: I’ve got a whole gallery to get through. More »

Hands-on with Harman Kardon’s Go + Play: (Verdict: Boomy Boom-Dock)
9:07PM Addy Dugdale | We saw Harman Kardon’s Go + Play portable dock last year, but at IFA we actually Went + Played with it (did you see what I just did there?). And we can report that the three-bass, two-treble speaker system RAWKS. More pics and info below. More »

Hands-On and Slot Exploration with the Sexy Samsung Printers (Verdict: NeXT Flashback)
8:30PM Addy Dugdale | Last week we gave you the specs of Samsung’s new Windows-, Lunux- and Mac-compatible printers &mdash the ML-1630 is a monochrome laser printer, the SCX-4500 a 16 page-per-minute multi-function printer &mdash and yesterday we got to see them for ourselves. Glossy, smooth, they’re the kind of printers that make you want to kick off your heels, sprawl on the top and start crooning “Makin’ Whoopie.” But first of all we wanted to know what the slot at the front of the ML-1630 was, so we beckoned over a Samsung gal… More »

Videolove at First Sight with Hitachi Blu-Ray Cameras
7:33PM Jesus Diaz | Despite what Phil Ryan from Crave said, the Hitachi Full HD 1080p Blu-ray cameras are very real. In fact, we played with them at Hitachi’s booth here in IFA and they felt absolutely fantastisch! Both the Blu-ray (BZ-BD70E) and the hybrid hard drive/Blu-ray model (BZ-BD7HE) are solid and fit well in our hands. Even without the hard drive as a buffer, the Blu-ray-only model worked perfectly good, as you can see in the video above. More »

Fingers-On with the MP3 Lederhosen and Hunting Jacket
6:58PM Addy Dugdale | Consider the Bavarian hunting jacket with built-in MP3 controls. Consider it, and then wonder why you’d want to listen to oompah music while you blast away at anything in feathers, fur &mdash or if you’re Dick Cheney, anyone who’s standing too close to you. To drown out the screams, I suppose. There is also a pair of matching lederhosen as well, which we already covered earlier this year. More »

10:54AM Seamus Byrne | VoIP is a great idea, but it’s always been a gamble of call quality and calling rates as to whether you’re really going to wash out with a better deal – particularly compared to just using a capped mobile plan. Now GoTalk has launched a new package at $14.95 per month that looks a better bet than most, with free calls to all Australian landlines AND all Australian mobile phones. The deal includes an inbound phone number as well.
The ‘go VoIP Aussie Pack’ is one of a few new options launched by GoTalk, the other being a nice add-on option that gives free untimed calls to 20 countries for $9.95 per month, and 20c flat rate calls to another 20 countries. Freebies are Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, South Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, and the USA. More »

10:37AM Seamus Byrne | It all kicks off this week, and apparently the Aussies will be gaining the powerful assistance of new ionised fabric that is set to “deliver ionic energy to the body through a negatively charged magnetic field”. WTF? Apparently it increases oxygen flow to the muscles. Apparently. Larkham reckons it makes you feel cooler, which feels good.
Ireland and South Africa are also Canterbury sponsored teams, but the NZ-based company doesn’t get to supply the All Blacks – they’re sponsored by Adidas. So could this be a big fuck you to their own side if Australia run over them in the last five minutes of the final thanks to that extra bit of energy left in the tank? We’ll know in a few weeks. -Seamus Byrne [The Daily Mail via The Raw Feed] More »
