Mil Mi-12 "Homer" Is World's Biggest Helicopter, Looks as Dumb as Simpson

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:50 PM on August 27, 2007

We missed the Mil Mi-12 in our roundup of crazy Soviet aircraft. The "Homer," as NATO calls it, is the biggest helicopter in the world at 220ft from blade to blade, as wide as a Boeing 747's.

Sanyo LP-Z2000 Enters Cheap 1080p Projector Battle

Posted by Charlie White at 11:20 PM on August 27, 2007

sanyo_projector_front.jpgThe battle of the 1080p home theater projectors gets even more rip-roaring today with Sanyo tossing its somewhat clunky looking Sanyo LP-Z2000 projector into the ring, at least in Japan. This 3-LCD $3000-ish monster looks more like an industrial-strength toaster, but still nails the specs with an HDMI 1.3a port, 1200 lumens and a 15,000:1 contrast ratio.

Iomega Launches "Affordable" 320GB and 500GB Home Network Hard Drives

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 8:30 PM on August 27, 2007

Iomega_HomeNHD.jpg
This morning, Iomega pushes hard to make network-attached storage more common in the home by launching a couple of Ethernet-equipped drives that are priced close to their USB-only siblings. There's a 320GB drive that lists for $149, and a 500GB drive going for $199. (A 360GB version should be available next month for $149 as well.) These may not be the very best deals out there, but they're definitely in the running.

Yahoo Mail Out Of Beta, Into Email To SMS And More

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:15 PM on August 27, 2007

yahoom.jpgYahoo is making big waves with their online mail service; they are set to offer an option to send SMS messages directly from your Yahoo mail account. The prospect of free, mass implementation of such connectivity has us a bit excited.

The overhaul is part of a revamp Yahoo is investing in and their hope is to reform email as a better integrated, "social communication" tool. Among other features, users will be able to check maps, directions and other travel details directly from within an email. Simply by hovering across an address, a pop-up window will appear offering the aforementioned information. We imagine this will save a lot of time in the long run. The SMS feature seems equally nifty; send a message to a mobile number and the reply will pop up in your inbox as an instant message.

All this integrating goodness will start to appear in the coming weeks and will be made available in the USA, Canada, India and the Philippines, which is just great because I had no use for email-SMS in the UK, anyway. That sucks! You guys have all the fun. Be sure to let us know how you find the new experience. [USA Today].

Jackie may be the first name of the greatest comedic martial artist/actor ever, but it is now also the name of the best basketball-playing robot too.

Meet Jackie, by day he is an articulated robot palletizer manufactured by Columbia Okura in Vancouver, but by night he becomes a kick-ass, hoop throwing superhero. The robot is a member of the Beck's Hybrid team, (specialists in hybrid crops), and was recently on display during their "Becknology Days" event.

Graphic art for your iPod from People Like Us

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:32 AM on August 27, 2007

peoplelikeus-00.jpg
Aussie design collective 'People Like Us' has got a slick range of graphic designer stick-on covers for your iPods available now. Probably best known (in my head, anyway) for their awesome burning paper aeroplane T-shirt, this range of iPod covers offers a good way of saying "I'm not here to flaunt my iPod, I'm here for the clambake." Or maybe something else, I'm not sure. But they definitely look shit hot, and that's the point I'm trying to make. Go have a look, and support some local graphic artists in their quest for iPod accessory supremacy. [People Like Us]

Gizmo: For Dads who need professional help

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:22 AM on August 27, 2007

new_gizmobile2.jpg

Here's a gift idea to break the monotony of socks, ties, and hankies this Fathers' Day, and it might give a hint to your family that there are professionals now available to do all that shitty family tech support you/we/all geeks are tired of having to do.

If you haven't heard of Gizmo, it's like the Geek Squad thing in America. Like tradies for your home computers and gadgetry - but unlike a tradesman they'll come exactly when you book them to come. They sent us word on some ideas for what they could do for your Dad this Fathers' Day. They're getting creative with how you can use their services, so we thought we'd share:

Nikon D3 & D300, AU pricing will have to wait... · Late last week we got lots of news on the Nikon D3 and D300 cameras. Word from Nikon is we won't hear the Australian pricing until October, but there will be a new Coolpix range announced later this week. -SB

Galleries: Yep, they're starting to pop!

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:51 AM on August 27, 2007

You may have noticed the odd gallery from the US site starting to appear locally since late last week, rather than just the link back to the original gallery. And in the entirely impartial opinion of this Editor of this AU edition, I'd say that our gallery code beats all layers of pants off the US style.

This is all thanks to our ubermonkey, Kaan, and his undefeated ten-fingered coding techniques. The occasional sad, simple link is still slipping through here and there, but we'll have it all sorted real soon for your photo gallery viewing pleasure.

FYI, other Giz AU projects in the works include better commenting stuff, polls, and more clever backend stuff that will free up extra time for me to write more local spots. Thanks for joining the party so far - we've only just begun! If you have any cool ideas for us to add to our list of "kewl ideas wot we want 2 make appen", throw us a comment below or at the tips line.

Epson V200 scanner: nice, if you still need a scanner

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:40 AM on August 27, 2007

V200_Left.jpg
We heard about the V500 from the mothership (local RRP $499), and now Epson has sent us news of their new Perfection V200 Photo slimline scanner, designed for home use. It's fast, it's high-res (4800dpi), and it does negs, slides or even big books that used to get caught under stupid scanner lids that wouldn't move out of the way. Available now at $249 RRP.

Quick poll: hands up if you still scan things? Hands down if you're only talking about your face, or your cat? Yeah, thought so, pretty much nobody. I reckon if you still have film photos lying around, or still take photos, you should just pay your local film lab to do your scans. Don't you have better things to take up desk space with? Like a third monitor? Mmmmm... more screen real estate...

For those who do have the inclination to scan (all you budding artists, no doubt), the full details are after the bump.

Australian $84 Million Porn Filter Thwarted By 16-Year-Old

Australian Post Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:30 AM on August 27, 2007

Post22508PornKingTom.jpg
Remember that $90 million we mentioned Howard is wasting on porn filters we mentioned would be a total failure? That we said 'the kids' would get past it without much effort? Good friend to you and me, 16-year-old schoolboy Tom Wood, (who could actually be a porn star with that name), managed to hack the security measure within 30 minutes of it going live, last Tuesday (21/08/07).

Not only did our hormone raging hacker get round the filter, he managed to preserve the status bar, indicating a functional security system. Not only is it possible for him to look at porn, he is able to deceive his parents into thinking he only ever uses the Internet to check New Scientist - the sneaky devil! And the story gets even better...

Extreme Tech Tests HDTVs For Standard Definition Compatibility

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:00 AM on August 27, 2007

p42608exte.jpgHDTVs are designed for HD playback, but there are often problems in picture reproduction when playing back media in standard definition (SD), such as from traditional DVDs. HDTVs usually display in either 720p, 768p or 1080p. DVDs, TVs and VCRs usually come in at 480i. The image would thus need to be converted to be represented accurately and this is the primary reason for poor SD reproduction on HDTVs. The video processor, or scaler, is responsible for converting the images. A poor scaler will lead to flicker and rough edges. Hit the link to see which HDTVs the guys at Exteme Tech declared to be kings of SD reproduction.

Dcube's D5 PMP Is Cute, Does Equalizing Tricks

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:00 AM on August 27, 2007

p32608d5.jpg
Dcube have hit the block with the snazzy looking D5 PMP. The specifications includes; either 1/2/4/8GB flavours, 2" (176x220) 260K colour display, MP3/WMA/OGG/AVI support, integrated FM tuner, either 40hours audio or 7.5hours video playback and all of this comes in at only 42g. So why tell you guys about another generic PMP?

The note worthy feature is the inclusion of Klisten's Wiseaudio technology. This ensures an automatic tuning process to reproduce the best possible sound. Basically, that means no messing with your equalizer. It may be just a gimmick, as sound reproduction is surly a matter of personal preference, but nonetheless it is an interesting addition and one we would be keen to try. State side price and launch details are not available at present. (Those Koreans may just keep the goodies for themselves). [The MP3 Players].

Loopwing Wind Power Generator Set Generates Fun, Looks Like A Weapon

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:00 AM on August 27, 2007

p12608wind.jpgThere is so much wind knocking around on our planet it would be a shame not to use any of it. Tamiya & Loopwing's wind power generator supplies enough energy to drive a small toy car, for some serious, environmentally friendly fun.

The kit supplied is flat packed, so you will have to get your DIY skills on. The pack of fun consists of two gears, a capacitor that will not take you back to 1985, a small steering module for your diminutive vehicle and a wind powered charging station. Exposing the assembled kit to 5miles/s winds for 5minutes will give you, a massive, 3.5hours of drive time. We are not sure if $30 could be spent any wiser.
