Giant Universal Remote, for the Sausage-Fingered

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:10 PM on August 13, 2007

p19337_1.jpgIf, like me, you have the condition known as sausage finger, then you'll know the pain of punching more than one button at a time on a remote. At 5.5x8.5x2.25 inches, and with buttons 3/4 inch square, this giant universal remote should solve that problem. It uses 4 AA batteries, and costs $39.98. [Things You Never Knew]

Remote Controlled Tarantula

It's life-sized and realistic in every way, apart from the fact that it has hidden wheels, LEDs for eyes and finds it difficult to stray from hard, smooth surfaces. Check out the spider in action after the jump.

But don't be fooled by the picture and think that the event was full of flying cars, experimental planes and UFO-shaped discs—all the entrants were standard-looking planes, as you will see in the videos after the jump.

Neo 808i: Small phone that actually looks cool

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:33 AM on August 13, 2007

Neo-Hand.jpg
There are quite a few "very small phones" out and about now, but this is one I've happened across while writing a column for Etihad's in-flight magazine. It isn't available in Australia (it's a UK / Middle Eastern phone), but it's interesting enough that I thought I'd share the info - if you're OS, you could always try nabbing one if you're in those neighbourhoods.

Full specs and more pics after the jump.

Mix Tape USB, Makes Us Happy, Reminds Us We Are Old

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:23 AM on August 13, 2007

MixTapeUSB.jpgSome days you wake and you just do not want to go on. You miss the touch of plastic that audiocassettes used to fill your life with. Well, the Mix Tape USB, by Suck UK should go a little way to help. No pricing information is available yet, but we are sure it will be worth it; just think...

Not only can you revel in the retro casing, you can also whip out the USB stick from the cassettes innards and load that up with tunes for your baby-boo. How will they know what is on there? Plug and play? You are not old school enough, man—there is a track-list record sheet included! I can just smell the good old days, I tell you. Oh no, that is the smell of not washing. To be fair, the two scents are fairly similar; my bad -I should go shower.

Howard to blow $90m on porn filters

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:05 AM on August 13, 2007

online-pron.jpg
Tee hee. Blow. Late last week the govt announced their biggest crackdown on net nasties since Alston's heyday - and boy did that first effort work a treat. A $189m package to cut the porn, the child sex predators, and bad language. Yes, bad language - that's going to be managed by a virtual bar of soap, swimming through the tubes washing the mouths of Australians who think it is clever to cuss others out. Game servers everywhere are on notice.

I'm all for cracking down on the predators. Castration by brick or rusty knife is suitable punishment for those animals. So $40m on that front for the fed police is all good.

But $90m for home filtering software?

Aussies getting on the green power bandwagon

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:43 AM on August 13, 2007

windmill.jpg

Seems we're doing pretty well on the green power front. Contrary to standard political attitudes of "no one wants to pay more for their power", it seems we're already up around the 8% mark of home users who choose to pay extra to have their power attached to renewable sources. That's double in the last six months. Efforts to date have removed the equivalent of 930,000 cars worth of emissions from the system.

Do you think this will make politicians see that more than a handful are eager to see environmental policy reforms? After all, not everyone can afford to choose to pay extra in this way (100% green can cost up to $400 extra per year) - others probably still don't realise you can choose this option. Where are you at? Honk if you think windfarms are sexy! *HONK*

Breakfast Wrap: Best of the Weekend

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:20 AM on August 13, 2007

breakfast-espresso.jpg

Kick start to the week with a whacking great bunch of best bits. More gems out there in the general mess too.

DIY telescope made with vinyl pipes and a large pot.
Made for easy transport. Clever stuff.

Cheapskate installs home A/C unit on roof of car.
I don't think he'll get much trade-in on that now.

1954 RCA TV wins Wired's best gadget of all time poll.
Runner up: 1757 navigational system.

Trevor Bayliss' Ecoplayer PMP.
He invented wind-up radio, now brings wind-up portable media - even video.

DirectX 10.1 royally screws DirectX 10 owners.
I was this close to buying an 8800GTX. Now I wait.

Google screws Google Video owners.
Case in point for why even BUYING DRMed videos can bite you in the butt.

Phase change memory: remember that name.
Flash memory could be obsolete before the end of the decade?

We Love Bouncy Ball Man

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:01 AM on August 13, 2007

Family Guy is funny because the script is comic genius; it is written with surreal wit and eloquence throughout. Bouncy Ball Man (BBM), as we have dubbed him, is funny for reasons that evade us. As many ladies have told us, we have funny faces. This is the kind of humour that BBM brings to the table. It may also be because he is a grown man that dresses in some kind of pink plastic, whilst pretending to be an extra from that Sony Bravia advertisement. In fact, we want to see a remake of that advert with millions of tiny Mr.BBM's bouncing about everywhere, going all loopy and causing a pinktastic, perspicacious, pretty picture that we can all sit back and learn answers to life's great mysteries from. Hit the video to laugh your ass off. [Random Good Stuff].

Universal Partners With Google To Rival iTunes

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:16 AM on August 13, 2007

royalty_fee12.jpgAnother online music download service is set to enter the ring. The difference this time? The partnership is between Universal and Kingpin, Google. The pairing off was announced earlier last week, but now more details have emerged on the business plan. The service called gBox, (not a euphemism), will be different to traditional offerings such as iTunes, as Google will play the role of advertiser and Universal will pick up the cash from the sale. The dangerous-duo are set to launch on August 21, 2007.

The beta's US only and will run for four weeks, and you'll be expected to keep your lips sealed about confidential information (that'll happen). Oh, and obviously, "Unlimited data plan is a MUST." Southern China to Tape Entire Population

Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:36 AM on August 13, 2007

sjff_03_img1000.jpgChina, in an effort to curb criminal activity, is installing 20,000 cameras in Shenzen. Cameras will track the city's 12.4 million people, and are fitted with software from American firm that promises to automatically detect the faces of those breaking the law.

But there's more: 180,000 other cameras are constantly filming in Shenzen, many closed for business use only. These cameras can be tied in with the police system for literally 10 times the cameras hooked to the system.

Intel and STMicroelectronics are expected to make the new platform available this year, in small quantities. So what is the fuss? In a nutshell, PCM is bigger and badder than its flash memory sister.

Genuine Meizu M8 Pictures Unleashed In The Wild

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:45 AM on August 13, 2007

M8p1A.jpgWe have had a keen eye on the Meizu M8 since it surfaced. Today, real images of the device have come to light. The pictures certainly do not shed any light on the feature set beyond what we know. What we can confirm is that the M8 appears to be every bit the phone sex-god, as we were led to believe by earlier computer generated depictions. Hit the jump to see pictures of the M8's bum and a comparison alongside the company's miniOne PMP. [myminiOne]. Thanks, Rick

The Stallion, World's Most Expensive Bigwheel

Posted by Mark Wilson at 2:02 AM on August 13, 2007

stallion.jpg$30,000 may sound like a lot to pay for a three-wheeler, but The Stallion by Thoroughbred Motorsports seeks to be an economic performance vehicle, combining car comfort with motorcycle acceleration.

Featuring a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that pushes 150HP, five-speed automatic transmission, and even A/C, The Stallion would make one hell of an unimpressive car, but it's not a car, it's a superlight vehicle that we're certain gets a crazy 0-60. The rider and passenger sit front to back, which won't allow for easy conversation, but the 45MPG highway might make up for lost chatter (besides, who likes easting bugs anyway).

Chair Suitcase, Unbelievably Is Not Black Magic
