Our Plan For Landing On An Asteroid

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 11:54 PM on July 30, 2007

FACT: An asteroid will one day kill us all. That's why NASA asked a 3D imaging company named DigitalSpace Commons to simulate a landing on an asteroid with modified spacecraft, pictured here. I'm partial to the production levels of Armageddon, but we're guessing this simulation is a bit more accurate. We still recommend NASA brings along Bruce Willis because, as we all know, someone will need to stay to detonate the bomb. It's just the way these things work out. [DigitalSpace Commons via cnet]

Google Streetview Cars Rocking Ladybug2 Spherical Camera

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 11:28 PM on July 30, 2007

google_car_ladybug.jpgWe've noticed small red cameras up on the top of those Chevy Cobalt camera cars gathering pictures from coast to coast for Google Streetview, and now an astute tipster has shown us which cameras those are: the Ladybug2 by Point Grey Research. It's a spherical digital camera, and a tantalizing tidbit of information is that the thing shoots video at 30 frames per second, and with nice, big 1024x768 frames, too. Does this mean that Google is shooting video, not just stills of every street of the United States? Well, it would make sense, because those cars are already roaming the streets—might as well go ahead and get relatively high-resolution video and not just still photographs. This camera grabs its video with five CCDs facing in all directions as well is one pointing straight up, letting it snag 75% of the full sphere. Then it sends its video via 1394 to a compressor unit that's able to stream those images at 30 frames per second. [Point Grey Research] (Thanks, Clem Taylor!)

Mr Lee Gives Cat's-Eye View of the World via NeckCam

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 10:22 PM on July 30, 2007

CC_TIT1.JPG.jpgLet's have a round of applaws (oh dear) and some stroky-stroky for Mr Lee, the world's foremost cat photographer. His owner, South Carolina resident Jurgen Perthold, was curious as to what Mr Lee got up to during the day. So he rigged up a shock-, scratch-, water- and theft-resistant camera, slung it round Mr Lee's neck and sent him off to hunt voles. Turns out he's pretty good at taking pics - as the gallery shows, after the jump.

Tote Boom Bag is iPod-Friendly, Too Small for the Beach

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:40 PM on July 30, 2007

1964_D.jpgiPod-compatible boombox bags are two-a-penny these days, but Fred Flare's tote is less hideous than a lot of the current speaker-bag combos that are around at the moment. Paying hommage to the vinyl 'n' crappy plastic turntable age, (no doubt you get an authentic tinny sound from the speakers) the bag runs on four AA batteries, and is compatible with MP3 players and mobiles. The only drawback is that, at just 12 inches wide, you'd be hard pressed to fit all your beach gear into it without a serious tussle. [Fred Flare via 7Gadgets]

Tell Your Car What to Play, Read With Ford Sync

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:17 PM on July 30, 2007

fordsync.jpgFord Sync is a new system developed by Ford and Microsoft that aims to fully integrate your MP3 player, cell phone and car computer with a speech recognition system. You will be able to climb into your SUV and say, 'Play artist Cliff Richards', and the annoying old timer will start blaring out of your speakers. It can even read out your text messages for you in an old-skool synthesised voice, which even understands lazy abbreviations like GR8. Jump to see it in action on a video featuring the action movie guy voice over.

Possessed Book Trick Scares People, Ghosts

Looking at its 2.6 x 2.6 x 5.3-inch 0.75-pound package, it seems they may be right. In any case, coupled with its 1,920 x 1,080 30fps recording on SD or SDHC cards, revamped image stabilization system and Leica Dicomar lenses, the HDC-SD5 is one of the sexiest camcorders in a while. Sony. Experience More: party night

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:43 AM on July 30, 2007

sony-wide02.jpg

So the big Sony. Experience More party was on Friday night, and by all accounts there was quite a Gizmodo crew on the scene. I managed to drag myself down there to catch the action, and all up it made for a good night out. A tag with my name on it wasn't there, so I was rather incognito - though in my jetlag haze it was probably a good thing as I would have come off as a crazy person.

I managed to nab some pics with a phone after forgetting my camera (again, I blame the jetlag). Jump the moat to see the pics and my take on a few of the featured attractions. Highlight? Had to be the little OLED TVs, though everyone wished they had a price tag, however crazy it may have been.

Hope those who made it along had a good night!

TPG close to launch on 'naked' DSL

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:04 AM on July 30, 2007

naked-dsl.jpgWe heard new plans from Virgin last week for their HSDPA-based phone + broadband boxes, and TPG also threw down some good news for the "I don't want no stinkin' landline" brigade. Over on the Whirlpool forums, a TPG rep announced they want to introduce two naked DSL plans. Lovely naked ladies not included, except here now and then when we get the lamest excuses - next time we'll run a guy with ripped abs, okay?

From the forum:

TPG would like to introduce ADSL2+ ULL plans.

ULL Plan includes data line and customers don’t have to subscribe Telstra copper line.

ADSL2+ All in One Basic | 25GB* (18 Peak+ 7 Off Peak) | $59.99
ADSL2+ All in One Super | 150GB* (35 Peak+ 115 Off Peak) | $79.99

*Speeds will be shaped to 64k/64k when download quota is reached.

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Needless to say opinion is being shared. All I can say is I'm moving house very soon and I hope this goes live before I'm in need of a new hook up.

Microsoft's Local SUV Armada vs Google Streetview Fleet

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 9:00 AM on July 30, 2007

googlevsmicrosoftcars.jpgMicrosoft's Windows Live Local armada is striking back against Google's Streetview fleet with all the technological terror they can find. Check this Chevy Tahoe's intimidating top: six huge cameras, two GPS antennas and what could be a laser rangefinder on top, all connected with giant cables. Google's gear may not be as impressive, and there's a fair chance the Chevy SUVs could cream the Colbalt in a head on collision. You know, if it ever came to vehicle on vehicle battle.

Regomate: RTA approved rego label holder

Australian Post Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:55 AM on July 30, 2007

regomate.jpg

Sick of scraping the crap off your windscreen each year when you update your rego? Regomate is a clever little sleeve that lets you slip the old one out and the new one in each year sans the trauma of getting every last scrap off the glass. The best of it is they have even gone to the trouble of getting RTA approval, so you won't cop any fines for trying to be nice to your front window.

Some of you will suggest the task is just a few minutes once a year. Others will call troll for suchk remarks. Ultimately, it is only $4.95 + $1.95 per refill. Spend the price of that beer you didn't drink when you were driving on the weekend!

Dell Promotes Their Laptops With Toshiba Destruction

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 8:45 AM on July 30, 2007

Dell's new promotion of their Latitude XT tablet PC is gets personal—claiming frustration with bad tablets, they saw Toshiba's competing M400 in half. We're not sure how, if at all, Toshiba plans to retaliate. But we humbly suggest the use of eggs, toilet paper and a half-broken bottle of Jack when proceeding. Thanks Matt!

Transformer Rings Make You Feel Cool, Look Stupid

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 7:53 AM on July 30, 2007

Final%3A29%20Transformer.jpgIf you have problems displaying just how much you love the Transformers then get yourself one of these rings. Two types will be made—Destron or Cybertron varieties—and they are strictly limited edition with only 50 being made each. At $185, the money is a small asking price to pay to show your true robot emotions. All you have to do now is take off any worthless rings you are wearing, (wedding rings etc), and pledge your true allegiance where it matters. Be warned you shall have to repress your excitement; pre-orders are being accepted now, but shipment should not be before next month. To contain yourself in the meantime you could host a Transformer themed party, or have a wet dream about Optimus Prime. The guilty feelings following the second experience would have me advise the first suggestion. Not that I've experienced either, of course. [Product Page via Uber Review]

Blow Ta Lamps Reminds Us Caged Pets Are Sad

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 7:30 AM on July 30, 2007

Post4%3A29%20Blow%20Ta.jpgThe Blow Ta Lamp is a striking design from Studio Italia Design—a lamp magically encapsulated within a glass bubble. The directional controls are executed via a magnet on the outer surface of the glass case and the power is supplied via a 12V lamp head. At $1200 the price of chic design is not cheap, but if you are in the field for contemporary art as furniture, it isn't too dear either.

Six Takes on the New Tivo HD

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 6:19 AM on July 30, 2007

0%2C1425%2Csz%3D1%26i%3D164868%2C00.jpgThe Tivo HD is the product were waiting for but beginning to doubt. Because Tivo's Series 3 model successfully brought HD to the platform, but at a price reserved for high-end home theaters. So when news of the $299 Tivo HD broke, we were elated. But how does it perform? Hit the jump for our Frankenreview: a promised consensus, once and for all, on whether or not the new Tivo HD is pants-worthy.

AU: Again, it's still a few months before we get the Seven-backed TiVo out here. As the TiVo hardware advances in the US, will we get older gear, further supporting the idea that the local networks hold Australian TV viewers in contempt? Yeah, I'm worried too.

Celltray, First Instrument to Display Living Biological Cells

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 4:50 AM on July 30, 2007

Post3%3A29%20Slide.jpgNanopoint has come up with a genuine scientific breakthrough that is set to revolutionise research and medical diagnosis in a flash. The hype surrounds Nanopoint's cellTRAY, IDSA's 2007 Gold Winner in the medical category, which allows scientists to image living cells on a slide for the very first time. The technology is a standard microscope slide with a twist; it incorporates an incubator to sustain the life of cells encapsulated within it. The viewable area is split into 7, 614 wells, containing a liquid medium. The wells are linked by a micro fluidic channel system that is able to supply nutrients, reagents and remove toxic wastes that build up.

Army uses video games for civilians and soldiers

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 4:05 AM on July 30, 2007

The Army has not only been using their videogame America's Army for recruitment (and subtle brainwashing of America's youth), but to train their existing soldiers—who use real weapons with (live?) ammunition while playing. This video shows the integration of America's Army in real settings, and how the Army can set up this arcade/simulator/training anywhere they are stationed with ease. I knew that all these videogames have transformed me into a lethal killer...if only I hadn't specialized in using fireflowers and stomping mushroom men! [therawfeed]
