1:40PM jenneth | An armed gang of four kidnapped one of the world’s top RPG gamers after one criminal’s girlfriend lured him into a fake date using Orkut, Google’s social network. After sequestering him in Sao Paulo, they held a gun against the victim’s head for five hours to get his password, which they wanted to sell for $8,000. And yes, the story gets even better. More »

11:00AM jenneth | Calling something life size in the world of gadgets usually isn’t regarded positively. Hand-Powered Chainsaw Helps Cut Those Hard-to-Reach Places
10:45AM jenneth | Trying to cut down a branch high on a tree with a chainsaw is a good way to gamble with your digits. If you value your thumb, perhaps you should find a better way to cut down high limbs. Might I suggest this ingenious hand-powered chainsaw? It’s the links from a chainsaw with 50 feet of string on either end. There’s a weight at one end, which you lob over the branch in question, and then you simply pull back and forth on the strings to start sawing. Check out a picture of it in action: More »

LEGO Salt ‘n Pepper Shakers
10:15AM jenneth | This design from Joel Hesselgren is the most ingenious use of LEGO for food consumption that we’ve seen since the LEGO dragon soy sauce and mayonnaise dispenser. The white column holds the salt while the black column holds the pepper, and the amount of each is regulated by how many of the holes are covered at once. You can get an equal distribution of salt and pepper, a 2:1, or just one or the other. Ingenious, and something we’d actually like to see in buyable form. [Yanko Design via Gearlog] More »

Google To Enter Wireless Biz, Wants To Make It Less Evil
9:43AM jenneth | Though there’s no official talk of a Google Phone just yet, the superpower has decided to ante up $4.6 billion to bid on wireless spectrum. Google did say it would only do this on one condition, however. That whoever won the spectrum would be bound by law to offer at least some access to it at a wholesale price to competitors. As you might have guessed, this has pissed off some of the existing wireless carriers, who claim that sharing spectrum would lessen the spectrum’s value. I’m sure both sides have nice charts and graphs to prove their legitimate points, but for now I’m going to side with the Goog. [Reuters] More »

GPS Rings Should Point You Toward a Mirror
9:30AM jenneth | If you have a terrible sense of direction but are too proud to be seen getting directions from a GPS device, this GPS jewelry is for you. It consists of a couple of rings, one for each hand, and they vibrate to tell you where to go. Need to turn left? Your left-hand ring will vibrate. Need to turn right? You know where I’m going with this. There’s also a control panel that hangs around your neck or clips to your belt that lets you put in your destination and such. So what do you think, would you rather have this than be seen staring at a map on a screen? Is wearing big purple rings really that much cooler? Me, I’ll stick to getting lost, thank you very much.
