Justin.tv visits iPhone Campout: San Francisco

So the Giz Justin.tv channel has been a little wonky in the early stages of our campout coverage, but Justin of Justin.tv has come by to outfit us with a new camera to combat the less-than-stellar sound and check out the circus himself. Gizmodo is holding up strong here, except that these goddamn street drummers won’t stop (wait…they’re leaving!). But the night is young…and still warm. Stay tuned, Gizmodo faithful.

Storms Ahead for The Brave 40 on 5th Ave

We’ve seen some comments asking for more details about the action on 5th Avenue. Well here it is, as requested. At the fore, of course, is the man who by now needs no introduction. Greg Packer was incredibly amiable, talking to anyone who approached him. He even paused for a moment to let us snap the photo above. Though he has been the highlight these past few days, he’s joined by about 40 others who are also camped around the Apple Cube, wrapping around the corner at 5th Avenue and 58th.

iPhone SF Campout Live (8PM PST)

Hey McCracken, one of your reporters, Michelle, got really freaked out she was on camera. Tell her I said sorry. Also, some Homeless guy, Stanely Michael Jackson, will stand in line for $200 bucks. That’s like $8 an hour. Text me at lnelyiphoneboy30 (AIM…get it?) if you want to take him up on his offer. Some german guy offered to buy someone’s second iPhone. I’m loving the live reporting. This is the best part of blogging. Getting outside of my house! More to come, updates on the main page. 22 Hours left for us, and 19 hours left for NYC. I hate those clowns and these drummers are driving me nuts. [iPhone SF Campout Live Video]

SF iPhone Line is a Friggin Circus (P.S. We’re live)

Typical. While NY has sweaty Yankees fans like Greg Packer, SF’s Apple store has Circus freaks. We’re streaming live, but here are some shots of the folks in line, including Jerry, Mark, the hard-looking haircutter of few words, and the Peep Show Mini Golf (the circus folks who brought a 1-hole golf course with them.) And Merlin Mann is here. BTW, I’m on the sidewalk, next to the street. One of these Stockton street buses could easily jump the curb and wipe me out. More to come. galleryPost('iphonesfcircus', 4, 'SF iPhone line is a Circus');

Vortex Bots Scale Walls, Wake Neighbourhood

By harnessing the power of a vacuum in much the same way your eighth-grade hovercraft did, Vortex’s Mobile Robot Platforms can scale walls and other hard surfaces with full mobility. Potential payloads include cameras, microphones and anything you’re willing to weld onto the back of a high tech RC car. Equipped with “semi-secure wireless communications” capabilities, these little spybots can creep into places your telescoping bipod can’t. Privacy be damned; if you can’t hear a miniature car vacuuming its way across your walls (check the third clip near the 2:00 mark), you deserve to get caught. Vortex VMRPs [via Oh Gizmo!]

Because we know you love art. And fire more.

Gizmodo AU

I’d wager that geeks are more inclined to like art than regular schmoes. There’s science behind it. Form. Function. Logic. Smarts. But I’m even more inclined to bet geeks like fire. So when we saw this beauty – Serpent Mother – on Boing Boing, built for Burning Man and set to tour to Amsterdam, we knew there’d be some appreciation. Love. Lust.

iSmudginator Allows Defacement of Virtual iPhone

The iSmudgeinator is a cute little Flash app that lets you wreak minor havoc upon an iPhone. Smudging doesn’t seem to be as bad as this time-killer suggests, but some degree of the “answer phone” ear grease smudging is likely to occur. Some scratches are probably inevitable as well, although you’d have to deliberately etch your artwork into the screen to match the severity your e-finger can lay down on this unlucky model. The latest version even comes with an iCloth to clean up after yourself. The iSmudginator [via Technabob]

How We’re Covering the iPhone Launch in Apple’s Hometown

Justin of Justin.tv is helping Giz cover the iPhone Launch SF, live. Sorry, no Greg Packer nipples. But SF is Apple’s hometown, and you can bet the fans will line up deep before Friday at 6pm. I’m going to relax a bit for an hour or two, since tonight promises to be a long one. But right now, the Lifecam is pointing right at the Apple Store on Stockton Street, where you can see the first of a few geeks lining up:

Shoot 1,000fps at 800×600: Phantom Miro 3

Gizmodo AU

WOOF! There is slow-mo, and then there is watching the ticks of Cesium-133 form the very definition of time. The Phantom Miro 3 shoots 1,000 frames per second at 800×600, or 2,200 at 512×512, OR >95,000 at 32×32. Video record isn’t quite so awesome, at a miserly 500fps. PAL or NTSC.

Shoots 8-, 10-, or 12-bit, at up to 1200 ISO colour or 4800 ISO mono. And controllable over Ethernet.

Isn’t science great? Expensive too. ‘Price on application’. That’s gonna cost ya.

Gamercize: Making Exercise Fun!

Applying hamster wheel logic to humans, Gamercize Sport is a console accessory that prevents controllers from responding unless you’re exercising. Nothing will give you the willpower to leave the thing plugged in if you’re really desperate for a relaxing game session, but if you’re a cardio-craving consoler this may be for you. Each last-gen adapter (Xbox, PS2/PSOne, Gamecube) will run you almost $80. An optional stepper is available for $60 and a stationary cycle will cost about $90. Next-gen plans after the jump.
