Rumour Battered: Hollywood Poo-Poos on Apple’s Movie Rental Plan

The briefly ballyhooed iTunes movie rental store did sound a bit too good to be true. While multiple sources confirm Apple’s feeler, the flipside is that the movie studios aren’t exactly smitten, according to Reuters. $2.99 for 30 days? Preposterous, sneers Hollywood. Easy portability to your iPod or iPhone? Poppycock.

AU: Sorry, I’ve been trying to avoid Apple, but stuff like this comes down the feed and it’s too important to just throw it into the briefs. Boo hoo. -SB

No iPhone SDK Means No iPhone Killer Apps

According to Apple, “no software developer kit is required for the iPhone.” However, the truth is that the lack of an SDK means that there won’t be a killer application for the iPhone. It also means the iPhone’s potential as an amazing computing and communication platform will never be realized. And because of this and no matter how Apple tries to sell it, the iPhone won’t make a revolution happen.

Apple WWDC Keynote: Less Booms, Lower Stock Price

You all know Steve’s favorite phrase other than “one more thing” is BOOM! Well there were definitely less booms at this this keynote than at Macworld ’07. In fact by our count, there were only 8. That’s 7 less than MacWorld’s 15. Of course the question that all of our financially minded readers are asking right now is, how did this correlate with Apple’s stock price?

Walt Mossberg Has the iPhone

Ooooohhh. Someone’s gonna be in trouble with Steve Jobs. Mossberg has the iPhone as of this morning, and he’s already flaunting it in public. An explicit rule between Apple and A-listers with early access is that this kind of showboating is a no-no.

Breakfast Wrap: Best of the long weekend

Gizmodo AU

After all that funky weather over the long weekend, and the temps dipping below the teens (Giz HQ is in Sydney, if you hadn’t guessed), I thought it a good morning for some tasty egg and bacon roll action. Mmmmm…

JVC launches 110-inch HDTV. Or you could buy a projector? Okay, this TV isn’t for those poor on space.

A nuclear sub on the move – on land. I cannot fathom this sucker cruising past my window.

PSP update rumours. 8GB memory on board? Slimmer profile? LED screen? Faster UMD?

Toshiba getting HD DVD into all notebooks by 2008. That’ll be cool, but isn’t it crazy they could be the ONLY ONES? I mean, really, why is this next gen disc format taking so long?

Departed breaks 100,000 HD disc sales. A first for next gen, though this is combo for both formats. Have you heard local stats for Q1 ’07 on disc sales? 512 HD DVDs, 5,078 Blu-rays… seriously, that is TOTAL.

Turtle Beach gaming headphones – 8 speaker hotness. Front, centre, rear, and sub in each ear? Kick ass.

Melted MacBook looks like toasted marshmallow. Thing is, it really does! Tasty…

Carnival ride used to make giant artwork. Think spirograph, but gigantic!

Artwork features floating, wireless-powered lightbulb. Like the cool MIT research on wireless power, plus some mysticism thrown in for good measure.

Stupid amounts of Apple WWDC keynote coverage. I think we’ll be ignoring Apple for as much of the rest of today as is possible.

Rumour: 360 Core $200

Mark this as extremely questionable, but Bloggingstocks.com says it’s legit. The word on the street is that Microsoft is dropping the Xbox 360 core system to $200. That’s right a 360 for $50 less than a Wii.

If this turns out to be true, it’d be a great way to pick a “baby elite” (Core 360+120GB Drive) for only $380. While not much else is known right now, we’ll be sure to let you guys know the second we hear anything else.– Ben Longo

AU: If such a thing came about, we’d hope to see a local reflection pretty soon after it dropped in the US. -SB

The cards are out now and will soon be available on pre-configured systems. Price-wise, they’re not a bad way to give your system’s graphics a kick. – Louis Ramirez

Windows Tablet Hybrid Can Transform into an LCD TV

I’m not a big Tablet fan, but this one has my full attention. Dubbed the Montevallo, this Tablet comes with two docks. One that morphs it into a traditional laptop/Tablet, and the other that turns it into an LCD TV (complete with built-in speakers). The display is only a mere 14 inches and there’s no word on the resolution, but it comes with a built-in TV tuner. Design-wise, this is one of the cooler Tablets I’ve seen, though it’s one of those cases where it can excel at both functions or suck at both. – Louis Ramirez

Microsoft Bringing Windows to Your Kitchen Counter

It’s invaded your living room, your bedroom and even your coffee table, and now Windows has its eyes set on your kitchen with a new PC-like device.

The Microsoft Tablet team is working on a new Kitchen Client that’ll include features like a family calendar, recipe center and a digital bulletin board. No word on when we can expect to see such a device, but the thought of having my toaster stream video doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. – Louis Ramirez
