More Gandolf? Running Windows Mobile?

9:56AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

This Palm smartphone is looking realer by the second. Here’s a spyshot that just surfaced over at Palm Infocenter. The device clearly shows a Palm logo and prototype serial number along with Vodafone branding. It also has the home and back navigational buttons found on all Windows Mobile smartphone devices. The Vodafone mark indicates this is a GSM device which will be offered in Europe. No other details accompanied the picture.

They also mention that the Gandolf will be the first Windows Mobile Palm phone, but we’re guessing they meant WM6. – Mark Wilson

New MacBook Pros, 3D Benchmarked

8:45AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

The new MacBook Pros based upon the Santa Rosa chipset have been benchmarked. The results? The new MacBook Pro consistently edged out the old quad-core PowerMac G5 w/Geforce 7300 GT video card, winning in 4 out of 5 tests.

Still, it’s fair to call the new laptops about even with the quad cores of yesteryear (better known as last year) because the results were so close. How does the new MacBook Pro compare to last week’s version? It’s much faster in 3D tests. More »

Carnival Ride Paints, Art Peaks Forever

8:00AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

The Good-Time Mix Machine is what happens when artists get hold of carnival equipment. I connected a gas generator and air compressor to buckets of paint and secured them into the seats of a Scrambler amusement park ride. Once the ride was in motion, paint sprayed out of the benches onto vinyl tarps placed underneath. The result is a series of enormous hypocycloid designs which recorded the hidden patterns created by the ride as it turned.

It’s tough to scale the image from the main picture’s perspective, but realize that the Good-Time Mix Machine is a full-sized ride, not some crappy model or something. And did we mention that we want one, or at least a massive spirograph tarp to cover our car/lawn/house when it rains? galleryPost('GoodTime', 4, 'GoodTime'); – Mark Wilson

Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 Gaming Headset: The Eight Means Eight Speakers

7:10AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

While it’s not packing the force feedback boom of Ben Heck’s recently unveiled AudioFX Pro 5+1 gaming headset, Turtle Beach’s latest 5.1 surround sound USB headset (also gamer-oriented), the Ear Force AK-R8, will sock your skull with dual sub-woofers and eight speakers. Eight.

Besides sporting a removable boom mic, it features a 10-band, six-channel EQ and allows you to hear outside sounds as well. (Though I’m not sure why you’d want to be distracted by the real world or your girlfriend during a hardcore fragging session.) The $150 price tag seems reasonable for a solid headset, but that could just be because I’m hung up on the eight speakers—the $30 pair on my desk seem so inadequate now. – Matt Buchanan

Palm Gandolf Pictures of Pictures

5:30AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

Morning Paper a news blog, claims to have pictures and information on the new Palm Gandolf. They say it features “qwerty keypad, Palm OS, Bluetooth, Camera, Micro SD Memory Card and…Rev A data capability.” And it will run $200.

Real or not, I do appreciate a good newspaper-type Photoshop job. It’s a throwback to an earlier era when people Scotch-taped their visions of flying carriages and portable jukeboxes. – Mark Wilson Thanks Paul!

Marka27 Mini God Speakers

4:45AM June 10, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

The Mini God line of speakers are our new Powers of choice. Towering at a height of 16 inches, we will have a tough time genuflecting at their feet, but that won’t stop us from trying.

Each unit features a functional speaker in its belly, while the rest are for decoration only. Powered by a 9v battery and armed with a minijack, these speakers may not prevent the theft of your unattended iPod, but they will ensure that the thief is scared shitless in the process.

Unfortunately, these beauties are a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive, with only 800 units available. Never before have I wanted speakers that most certain sound like crap. Two glorious bonus shots after the jump. More »
