Built by MIT’s Guy Hoffman, AUR is a desk lamp that can track your movement so it’s always shining a spotlight where you need it. The lamp, which is dubbed a lighting assistant, was created to explore the relationship between humans and robots. I personally think it’s cool and would love to replace my flashlight and desk lamp with something like this. – Louis Ramirez
Travel season has arrived, my friends, and those of you lucky enough to head overseas might be wondering how to power all those electronic geegaws you can’t do without. Coming to the rescue is this universal AC travel adapter, letting you connect a variety of plugs to one side, and then by turning its knob selector, lots of different style plug blades come popping out of its other side. Just a twist of your wrist lets you tap into the juice in 150 countries.
Although it looks a little hefty to play nicely with other things you might want to plug in next to it, it’s still a fairly compact size for the crowded suitcase, and its $17 price is not too burdensome, either. Just be careful what other juice you tap into while you’re over there. – Charlie White

Sony’s latest DVDirect external burner now supports the company’s high-def line of camcorders. The VRD-MC5 (big brother to the VRD-MC3 and VRD-VC30) is the first unit capable of burning DVDs from any of Sony’s AVCHD cameras. Like previous burners, it’ll also come with a memory card slot (it reads all the usual suspects like SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc) and a nice 2.5-inch LCD. It’s debuting in Japan first for about $246. – Louis Ramirez

Intel may remain the big gorilla, but AMD is making a lot of friends. After Dell said it would offer chips with AMD, Toshiba decided to follow suit, with plans for 20% of its US and European models to sport the alterno-chip. The AMD models, the first of which are due towards the end of summer, will be—yep, you guessed it—cheaper than comparable Intel machines. But does that mean they won’t be as good? – Wilson Rothman

We’re still scratching our heads trying to figure out if these guys are brilliant or crazy. They claim to have created a microwave weapon that can shoot a heat ray 200 feet away. Of course, any hope of future offspring or a cancer-free existence is off the table for these jackasses. Who knew it was so easy to take the guts out of a microwave oven and make a homemade weapon? – Charlie White More »
UPDATE: Boom! It’s here! Six minutes of Nürburgring action (race starts 40 seconds in, sorry) – and it ends with a bang!
It’s even better in real life than in the pictures.
The three-screen mode of play is simply phenomenal, and if you listen carefully you’ll hear the sound of car nut’s engines revving in anticipation. I’ve just come back from the local launch event, where we got to get hands on with one of these beastly setups.
Read on for a detailed examination of the pros (and pros) of this ultimate driving experience (they are Samsung’s latest LCDs too).
Sony’s getting into the HD Radio game, and its first radio is the XDR-S3HD tabletop. It’ll go for $200 in July, will have a remote, alarm clock, sleep timer, and a cable to jack in music from your “digital music player.” And in case you missed it, that stunning cherry wood finish.
Is this some sort of response to Samsung and Pioneer XM gear?
Briar Dudley of the Seattle Times interviewed Glenn Lurie, AT&T President of National Distribution, about the Jesus Phone. The meat of the piece kinda sorta confirms that there are more unannounced iPhone apps, which we kinda sorta heard about during the Q2 earnings call. The Apps, specifically from Google, are presented in the context of justifying the price, and are presumably in addition to Google Maps on the Jesus Phone.
There are other things — you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming — there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue.
Then he goes on to give a nice little “No Comment” in regards to future subsidies. More »
After six months in the making, the blog-friendly Z5fw is finally here. A sweet little number in the tradition of Sony’s Cyber-shot T1, sleek with a sliding front and bright 2.5-inch LCD, it’s not really expensive, either: the 6-megapixel, 3X optical zoom camera costs $219, has plenty of features, and is great in most lighting situations.
But I’m not planning to review every little silver camera that falls in my lap (ouch). This baby stands out because it is supposed to have tools to make a blogger’s life easier. Follow the jump to see each blogger perk coupled with my strong opinion. (Hint: Some are great, some need work, and some should run back home to Mommy, crying all the way.) More »
